I typed "The End" on Dead Ice last night. It's the first book I ever wrote staring out at the sea, but I think not my last. I've wanted to live by the sea since I was twelve. Today, I'm have that emotional roller coaster that comes with the creative drop after a book is finished. I know it's part of my process now, so I ride it much better than I did years ago. I remember when it first started happening, I wondered what the hell was wrong with me, but now I know. It's been a good day, enjoying staring at the sea and not writing, for a change, but I've done the happy/sad, happy/sad that is part of the first day after, "The End". I've already been talking to my editor in New York, answering some forgotten notes. Soon we'll head home to snow and cold, from our tropical break. It's been great. So glad the next Anita Blake novel is done and you get to read Dead Ice in June!

A wonderful couples' weekend with Jon. Edited a novella/novel & will be putting handwritten edits into computer tomorrow then off it goes to my agent. When she, and my editor say I can share what it's about, I will. They have requested not to find things out on Twitter & FaceBook, please. *laughs* Final edits on new blog tomorrow, as well. We also finally watched the second Hobbit movie. Special effects were amazing, but we were left puzzled at some of the drastic changes from the book, and why they were done. Glad we saw it, but also happy we didn't go to the theater to see it, DVD was fine. Anything else I could say will be spoilers, and there may still be a few people that haven't seen it, and most spoilers would be strictly movie & nothing to do with the book, The Hobbit, so they'll be a surprise.

The deal I made with my editor was that I'd work on the copy edits for, A Shiver of Light, on my birthday, in exchange for getting to have a long weekend over Valentine's Day. I've been too sick to work on them today, but they are waiting on my desk for tomorrow morning. I'll work on the small queries first, and then the minor/major rewrites last, so the page numbers don't change between the printed out copy and the computer file. I have until the 24th to finish and deliver them back to New York.

Do I hear, Mission Impossible, music? Or maybe circus music?

13 pages on the new Merry book! I finished editing the novelette that I wrote last week. It's off to New York. When my editor, publisher, agent, & I decide how best to share the story with you, I'll let you know. There are so many new choices in publishing now & new tech coming all the time who knows what the choices will be.

Wow, guys, thanks for all your answers on what Nathaniel should use as a pet name for Anita. I've skimmed them, but truly reading nearly 1,500 comments may have to wait until after I finish copy edits. *laughs* Seriously, overwhelmed by your enthusasim and how much you love my imaginary friends. A few of you suggested that Nathaniel wouldn't have a pet name for Anita & since nothing has worked, I'm going with that for this book. I'll look over your suggestions & post my thoughts later. We can use the nickname in a later book, if I find one I lke.

I will be at St. Louis ComiCon this Saturday only. Not only will I be doing a Q & A, but I thought I might read from first chapter of Affliction either before, or after some questions. I can't remember the last time I read at a con, but I thought you guys might enjoy it. Also, we are looking for an artist to help us do Lunatic Cafe as a graphic novel. Before someone asks, Brett Booth is currently under contract at DC, so we can't use him, but him being unaviable means some other artist has a chance to come play. Show Jon & I your samples, and be as serious about your deadlines as I am about mine, and lets do this.

Done - Affliction is finished! Finished at 5:50 AM this morning. Sent everything off to my editor except epilogue chapter which I routinely do after some sleep. Epilogue chapter finished at 8:00 PM. Sent to editor, so now well & truly done!

Just as an FYI maybe to spur some discussion LKH announced this on her twitter,

10/8/09 4:29pm: Divine Misdemeanors which is the 8th Merry Gentry book comes out December 8th, I believe, or within days of that. Not long to wait

And all afternoon she's been tweeting about her sex scenes between Kitto, Mistral, and Merry. So she's still not done. Does this mean that she doesn't get her books edited? I mean, is that even allowed? Do real publishing houses let their "powerhouse" authors just release it straight to book?

I'm pretty much appalled.

On the BookCrossing.com forums, we were discussing errors we'd found in books. Once I'd controlled my involuntary 'laughing uncontrollably' response, I posted the following:

I'm amazed not to see any Anne Rice or Laurell K. Hamilton references!
I adore their early work, but these ladies are the queens of editing howlers in vampire-bookdom.

Laurell K. Hamilton is even worse. Her books have nose-dived in more general (content-related) ways in the last few years, but her grasp of the stuff I mention above has, strangely, also not been caught by an editor. The fandom's pet howler is in "Incubus Dreams", where the word 'deity' is mis-spelled not just once, but every time it's used. She also mis-uses it in another way, saying of a character that they [paraphrase] 'are diety', rather than that so-and-so is *a* 'diety'. An entire fandom is shaking its head and wondering when the madness will stop. :-O

***

So I'm hoping to find out if there are other fans lurking over there who will appreciate the scale of the problem. I'm also going to read the whole thread carefully to see if any other authors are having edit bypasses on the scale of LKH. If anyone seems enthusiastic about the subject, I'll point them in this community's direction.

I've a friend who is a published author, and has admittedly never read anything by LKH. Now- I explained the situation, gave her an in-depth look at what was going on by contrasting passages from the early books with the new ones and explaining the established characters- then telling her what they had turned into (well fleshed-out vs. two-dimensional, again providing examples) and she came to this conclusion:

She believes that LKH is somehow sick and her editor is milking her like a cow.

Support? Derision?
