It just gets worse...

From Marvel's March '08 solicits:

MARVEL SPOTLIGHT: LAURELL K. HAMILTON/GEORGE R.R. MARTIN
Written by JOHN RHETT THOMAS
Marvel Best–Selling Authors Laurell K. Hamilton and George R. R. Martin – two titans of modern fiction – get their turn in this month's SPOTLIGHT! Hamilton's ANITA BLAKE: VAMPIRE HUNTER series of novels has been going strong since the early nineties, creating legions of fans with a passion for her unique brand of Midwestern vampire mythology. Martin's medieval fantasy THE HEDGE KNIGHT charmed fans of his massively popular epic A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE with the tales of young Dunk and his journey to knighthood. Both New York Times best-selling writers bring the depth and variety of their exciting literature properties to Marvel. Together, they've already achieved great things – but with what's coming in 2008, you haven't seen anything yet!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Sure, they do spotlights all the time. But to put the two of them together in one spotlight? It's blasphemy I tell you. That and the write up makes it look like they're working together at some point. I can only hope that this is hyperbole and an enthusiastic write up because otherwise I think I'm going to be sick.

I'm just amazed anyone ever thought the two of them were even vaguely comparable. I mean, sure they're both "authors", but that's like "Spotlight: Chasey Lain/Dame Judi Dench" because they're both "actresses".

(Which is not to denigrate porn stars, they're just at rather different points on the spectrum.)

This spotlight is right up there with the Phrase "First Sexy Paranormal Comic" or some other tripe that was being bandied about, the crew at Newsarama were having a field day snarking that one.

All I'm seeing there is "two titans of modern fiction" and having flashbacks to Clash of the Titans. Martin would unleash a horde of skeletons with Centurion helmets to hack LKH to pieces, and then she'd morph into a cyclops (think about it, people) and try to stomp on them all. Key word here is try.

It'd be a Harryhausen fantasy come true.

"Literature properties". Oh, Marvel. You keep using those words. I do not think they mean what you think they mean. Words on a page do not equal "literature", not by a long shot.

They seem to get tossed together a lot at Archon, too, mostly because they both go to Archon a lot and both write long series, so they get put on the same panels.

I can't believe they're going to write anything together. Okay, maybe she'd do it to try and gain stature in the fantasy community (even she must realise by now that she's pissed off a substantial amount of people, and seen as a joke by plenty more), but it'd be a one-off after the guy found out how hard she'd be to work with.
