As a first hand witness to a family whose recently decided to learn to shoot and handle firearms, I can understand it, they are cool they come in so many ranges sizes and types and it's interesting to see how one kind handles over another. However my father decided rather than going for the big mean guns, went for the antique replicas and is getting involved with Cowboy Trick Shooting/Reinacting instead. I haven't seen him this excited about a hobby in a decade.

But he never tries to carry them where they are not needed, all guns are kept locked up and the ammo locked in a separate location in the house, and is as disgusted with the rare few who are making the sensible gun owners look bad.
