Even published, polished people can have problems with show don't tell in the first draft for exactly the same reason.

I'm a fan of Tim O'Brien's minimalist style, but he achieves that style by writing everything out, and then going back through his stories and taking out words he considers unnecessary.

Step 1 is getting the story out of you. Step 2 is making it better.
