LKH Comic-Con interview

Hi folks, long-time lurker, first time poster. I came home to find this magazine from Comic-Con 2007; as you probably know, Laurell is speaking there as a guest this year. There's really nothing ground-breaking in this interview, but I thought people might want to read it anyway. Please pardon the terrible scans, my scanner isn't very good -- but the horrible contrast is their fault, I swear!

I'm going to that, I'm going to probably try my best to avoid LKH, since I don't know what I'd say to her if I came in contact with her ^.^

You're going to miss out on a lot of good things, it looks like. I'm such a comic book geek, and they're showing some of the comic book movies I've been waiting for ages for! ^.^

I met her when I was in 7th grade (I'm a junior in college). Her and Gary and Trinity. They were pretty nice, she definitely didn't act like she does now. It will be surreal seeing how different she probably is.

... I believe we've already seen what would happen with a LKH character at Hogwarts. I bet the kids at [livejournal.com profile] deleterius would have a field day, though. If we could even tell it from the 28347239472394874 other Mary Sue Goes To Hogwarts fics.

Why only the early years? Is it because the later J.K. Rowling books somehow manage to be darker than her teh h0tzrs vampire novels? Or does LKH just want to get a Mary Sue in there before Ginny and Harry hook up?

This reminds me of this terrible, terrible, terrible HP smut fic I'd read and I just had to know if the author was like, fourteen or something for it to be that bad. What I found was worse. The chick's latest 9 or 10 journal entries were all singing LKH's praises and going on about how wrong Teh Haterzz were and how awesomly hawtt the micah smexx scenes were and how they just couldn't handle it.

If anything, it explained a lot.

Original

CCI: Imagine that you are out on the town for a girls' night out with Anita and Merry. What woman-to-woman advice would you share with them?

LKH: Oh, you don't want me to give either of them advice. Anita wouldn't welcome it, and Merry would ignored it. Don't all friends ignore relationship advice? I don't really think Anita And Merry would get along all that well.

My Vision of How The Interview Could Have Gone

CCI: Imagine that you are out on the town for a writing circle night night out with Anita and Merry. What novel editing advice would you share with them?

LKH: Oh, you don't want me to give either of them writing advice. Anita wouldn't welcome it, and Merry would ignore it. Don't all successful authors ignore their editors? I don't really think Anita And Merry would get along all that well, both of them being Mary Sues off the same person and all. Besides, it's not like I have any clue myself what I'm writing at any given moment.

What, the characters being short, "voluptuous", with dark curly hair and dead mothers didn't give it away for you?

I've seen the "vivid prose . . . complex worldbuilding" description before on Wikipedia. I would hardly describe her prose as "vivid". Her writing style's very to-the-point and not that descriptive (except for when she's talking about people's clothing).

Re: the second page, comments on the Merry Gentry series -- if the fae are dying out exponentially, why does it make sense to kill off a whole bunch MORE of them just for Merry not getting pregnant first?

Also, this is bullshit:

"Most mixed-genre writers strive to make the ordinary fantastic. I take the fantastic and make it ordinary."

This is simply an untrue statement. Unless I'm losing my mind. It is just not so. Does she read?

(Also, some of this magazine's copyediting choices are annoying me. Do NOT ital "Micah" when referring to the character, only when referring to the book title. Gah. But that's not LKH's problem.)

Oh, she makes it ordinary alright. ordinary to the point of boredom.

I also like that she says JC and Asher don't have their own books yet, because THEY haven't come up with ideas for one. Not SHE hasn't come up with ideas, THEY.

And how can she go out for a night on the town with Anita and Merry, if they're just her? I mean for crissake, the pics of LKh and Anita in that interview are nearly identical. I wonder when the pic of LKh was taken, because she doesn't look half bad.

[identity profile] summersdream.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if she's realized that whole fantastic-made-ordinary is kind of... not a good thing.

I think the pic just shows the difference that a professional make-up artist and good lighting can make. She really is attractive when she's not doing that harsh line of black around her eyes. I wish someone would explain how much more her eyes would rock with a smoky look that's more age-appropriate (and honestly, most people in general look better without a harsh black line on their eyes). There might also have been some retouching on the photo, mostly on her face- probably just smoothing some lines.

"I'd love to do one about Jean-Claude or Asher, but they haven't come up with an idea that would fit an entire book yet"

*blink blink*

She can't think of a story about JC and Asher that would take up a whole book?

I....what??

[identity profile] rantingmule.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What scares me more is that she thinks HER CHARACTERS come up with stories, not She The Author and Creator.

People who hear voices that tell them what to do are generally considered CRAZY by today's society. ;)

Thank you, yes! I couldn't bring myself to read the entire interview, but I did notice that part and my brain just shut down.

[identity profile] kyalesyin.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You see that picture of her on the second page? Look into her eyes. They're dead. Totally vacant. She might as well be a reanimated corpse. There is nothing in there.

Its scary.

[identity profile] kyalesyin.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thats what I've seen in all the pictures of her, and actually those of her staff lately. Glassy-eyed fanatics the lot of them. I mean, you saw the badly photoshopped promo pics, right? Just the same. Creeeeeepy.
