funny & true

This is from one of my favourite cartoons:

I am a librarian and can truthfully attest to the behaviour seen here. I personally gave up after OB but dip in occasionally (I live in hope but live with disappointment). Jim Butcher now provides me with my high quality fix of vampire and magic!

And your fix of misogyny and power-ups every book as well?

I'll agree with the power ups although he got powered down in the last book, but what do you consider misogynist?

I live in the UK, and we've only just had Proven Guilty released over here. As for the misogynist comment, [livejournal.com profile] viridian5 is the one who brought that to my attention and she's got a post about it, focusing on how it's pretty obvious in the first book, but Harry consistently makes it clear that he considers most of the women he meets less than him unless they're powerful magically. Of course he's nowhere near as chauvanistically arrogant as Richard is, and Harry's a lot braver than Richard, as well as morally superior.

I have to agree with you on the mysoginy issue, at least in the first book. The whole wank about opening doors for women and women who don't appreciate it/him. Bit eye-rolly.

I've only read the beginning of Storm Front. (Not really reading anything right now thanks to this MCAT study prep from Doom). I was afraid the mysoginy thing was the author speaking through the char. If it's just a character flaw thing... meh. At least it makes the char well-rounded. Annoying, but well-rounded.

As far as I've read it, it's a character flaw, and one he admits. But how is it misogynistic? He comes to depend on Murphy to be a strong backup and partner, and while he holds open doors and the like, it's not as if he does it because he thinks women are necessarily "weak." Anita may be pissed off because she's all RAWRFEMINAZI, but hell; I wish anyone was half as considerate as Harry is at times. There are strong female characters in the books, some of whom kick his ass. Misogynistic? Uh, what?

I read the first two Dresden books. Murphy is RAWRFEMINAZI, not to mention stupid. And Dresden just bored me, plus the writing itself irked me. Not going to spend any more time on Dresden. I do love the TV show, though.
