Let's talk about sex, baby...

sorry, a comment to the last post (about Anita and protection) got me thinking...

If I recall correctly, when Anita started with Jean Claude, there was some talk of Vlad Syndrome (and later on something called Mowgli Syndrome if a woman conceives with a lycanthrope in animal form). it was omggod horrible, oh the poor children, yadda yadda yadda.

Has any of this been addressed after those mentions, and what Anita's doing to prevent pregnancy? God knows she's too sparkly and special to get an STD...

(please forgive if this has already been addressed. I did try to find it in the archives, but my googlefu/tagfu has failed me)

Now that I think about it, what exactly is the point of wearing a condom with a long-dead vampire? JC would be well outside the range of baby-making, per LKH's already screwy biological rules; can they even host STDs?

Yeah, but there aren't any hard-and-fast rules in the Anitaverse. LKH loves her "this doesn't usually happen, but in this particular case it did" exceptions... so while JC is theoretically sterile, sensible precautions are still, well, sensible.

(as far as canon goes, he was considered one possibility as the father of Anita's DM pregnancy scare, albeit an unlikely one. So apparently it can happen)

They had sex in a bathtub and with raised body temperature, apparently the possibility of pregnancy could come up. I do believe the whole reason behind the condom was, "lest anything befall you." So even he was concerned with STDs. I'm pretty sure this was the same book where Monica and Robert were working on getting pregnant while in a hottub, and Robert was wayyyy older than JC.

Later in ID (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] moons_storm for reminding me) -- the only reason for using a condom with Requiem and Byron was because Anita did not know them, they'd only been in the country for two weeks prior. Apparently after she gets to "know" guys, then a rubber is optional, I guess. Because Anita does not do casual sex, nooo. She needs to get to know her men as people too.

Meanwhile, down in the basement, I bet she doesn't even know about Damian's collection of hand-painted Lord of the Rings figurines and sometimes that makes him cry.

Poor Damian, in the basement. I thought that something would happen with that plot line when he demanded that she refurbish it as an apartment, but nooooo. That could have been an awesome plot line handled right -- the council could have come after her, because she's done something no one has done in ages or his maker could have found them, plus there the whole awesomeness of vikings and that history and mythology, but we haven't seen Damian since ...

He's obvs participating in a gaming group and staying the hell out of her way.

This is why there's dudes inexplicably over at Anita's all the time -- they're all giant nerds and Damian runs the best campaigns. Every time one of them comes up from the basement to get a snack, they run the risk of Anita catching them and there's some awkward "...uh, I'm obviously here for you! How's that arduer? Good? Okay then." which may then explain why the guys keep giving Anita advice on her diet and REMEMBER TO EAT PROPERLY GODDAMN so that she won't have to screw people so often. Only she's Anita, so it's not like she's actually listening.

Oh gods I LOL'ed so hard at the idea. Does he dress up too? He's got to have period-appropriate Viking clothes. There he is, rolling dice while hunched over the table in furs and holding a giant ax.

Robert was wayyyy older than JC.

I think you're thinking of the wrong vamp. Robert was only about a century old, and Jean-Claude was his maker.

Actually, I remember it being explained as "if the semen is re-heated for enough time, it might happen". Which was how NonDescriptWoman#236 got pregnant..with a vampire subject of JC. (also got widowed pretty soon. You can't have too much of this whitebread bliss in darkety novels)

And this thread has just reminded me how ANNOYED I am that we never got to hear from Monica again, or find out what happened with her baby. Of course, given the special time-dilation properties of LKH's writing, she could still be pregnancy and barely showing.

I'm coming to this way late, but I remember the rationale for using a condom with JC and any other vampire/lycanthrope with whom Anita fucks. Though both vamps and weres can't catch STDs, if they recently had sex with someone who had an STD the virus or bacteria can be transferred to another partner. That is, if the creepy crawly that causes the STD is still alive on their penis, it could infect another partner.

At the risk of defending LKH, Anita was on the pill even before the pregnancy non-scare in DM, but she only used condoms with new or unfamiliar partners like Byron (in ID?).

I'm pretty sure at the time of the pregnancy scare it was mentioned that Anita was no longer on the Pill because "she never remembered to take it". Which at least is consistent with her total lack of remembering to do things like eat or feed the ardeur.

Anita is definitely a typical TSTL heroine. I think if I was boinking everything alive and undead I'd remember to use birth control and also do anything to protect myself from STDs. That's just me though. I wouldn't think getting the paranormal clap would be entertaining and I'm too old to have pregnancy scares.

I can never understand that. I take mine when I wake up, which right now is much later in the afternoon, but I left my alarm set to 8:30. So I wake up, take the pill, then go back to sleep. Wow, how difficult.
