sorry, a comment to the last post (about Anita and protection) got me thinking...

If I recall correctly, when Anita started with Jean Claude, there was some talk of Vlad Syndrome (and later on something called Mowgli Syndrome if a woman conceives with a lycanthrope in animal form). it was omggod horrible, oh the poor children, yadda yadda yadda.

Has any of this been addressed after those mentions, and what Anita's doing to prevent pregnancy? God knows she's too sparkly and special to get an STD...

(please forgive if this has already been addressed. I did try to find it in the archives, but my googlefu/tagfu has failed me)

Wasn't there the one book where she might've been pregnant? Honestly can't remember any mention of birth control before then, when there was (I think) something along the lines of "Welllll, we use condoms when we remember them."

yeah, it's in whatever book ronnie turns into a psycho bitch.

Yeah, that's in Danse Macabre. After the OMG FLAIL FLAIL NOEZ of the whole deal, they came to the conclusion that oh dear, they should start using condoms again. Everyone. And I think Anita would going back on the pill? I have been headdesking so hard about that book, I might have concussed some of the details away from my brain.

Augh. Now if only I can banish the memory of liquid soap lube.

EDIT: Actually, when Anita first had sex with Jean-Claude, they used a condom. I remember being all "ooh yay, safe sex! Yippee!" when I read the scene, but that was the one and only appearance of any kind of prophylactic once Anita started to have sex up until the whole pregnancy scare.

Now that I think about it, what exactly is the point of wearing a condom with a long-dead vampire? JC would be well outside the range of baby-making, per LKH's already screwy biological rules; can they even host STDs?

Date: 2009-10-01 07:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] baeraad.livejournal.com
Yeah, but there aren't any hard-and-fast rules in the Anitaverse. LKH loves her "this doesn't usually happen, but in this particular case it did" exceptions... so while JC is theoretically sterile, sensible precautions are still, well, sensible.

(as far as canon goes, he was considered one possibility as the father of Anita's DM pregnancy scare, albeit an unlikely one. So apparently it can happen)

They had sex in a bathtub and with raised body temperature, apparently the possibility of pregnancy could come up. I do believe the whole reason behind the condom was, "lest anything befall you." So even he was concerned with STDs. I'm pretty sure this was the same book where Monica and Robert were working on getting pregnant while in a hottub, and Robert was wayyyy older than JC.

Later in ID (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] moons_storm for reminding me) -- the only reason for using a condom with Requiem and Byron was because Anita did not know them, they'd only been in the country for two weeks prior. Apparently after she gets to "know" guys, then a rubber is optional, I guess. Because Anita does not do casual sex, nooo. She needs to get to know her men as people too.

Meanwhile, down in the basement, I bet she doesn't even know about Damian's collection of hand-painted Lord of the Rings figurines and sometimes that makes him cry.

Poor Damian, in the basement. I thought that something would happen with that plot line when he demanded that she refurbish it as an apartment, but nooooo. That could have been an awesome plot line handled right -- the council could have come after her, because she's done something no one has done in ages or his maker could have found them, plus there the whole awesomeness of vikings and that history and mythology, but we haven't seen Damian since ...

He's obvs participating in a gaming group and staying the hell out of her way.

This is why there's dudes inexplicably over at Anita's all the time -- they're all giant nerds and Damian runs the best campaigns. Every time one of them comes up from the basement to get a snack, they run the risk of Anita catching them and there's some awkward "...uh, I'm obviously here for you! How's that arduer? Good? Okay then." which may then explain why the guys keep giving Anita advice on her diet and REMEMBER TO EAT PROPERLY GODDAMN so that she won't have to screw people so often. Only she's Anita, so it's not like she's actually listening.

Oh gods I LOL'ed so hard at the idea. Does he dress up too? He's got to have period-appropriate Viking clothes. There he is, rolling dice while hunched over the table in furs and holding a giant ax.

Robert was wayyyy older than JC.

I think you're thinking of the wrong vamp. Robert was only about a century old, and Jean-Claude was his maker.

Actually, I remember it being explained as "if the semen is re-heated for enough time, it might happen". Which was how NonDescriptWoman#236 got pregnant..with a vampire subject of JC. (also got widowed pretty soon. You can't have too much of this whitebread bliss in darkety novels)

And this thread has just reminded me how ANNOYED I am that we never got to hear from Monica again, or find out what happened with her baby. Of course, given the special time-dilation properties of LKH's writing, she could still be pregnancy and barely showing.

I'm coming to this way late, but I remember the rationale for using a condom with JC and any other vampire/lycanthrope with whom Anita fucks. Though both vamps and weres can't catch STDs, if they recently had sex with someone who had an STD the virus or bacteria can be transferred to another partner. That is, if the creepy crawly that causes the STD is still alive on their penis, it could infect another partner.

At the risk of defending LKH, Anita was on the pill even before the pregnancy non-scare in DM, but she only used condoms with new or unfamiliar partners like Byron (in ID?).

From: [identity profile] cicipsychobunny.livejournal.com
I'm pretty sure at the time of the pregnancy scare it was mentioned that Anita was no longer on the Pill because "she never remembered to take it". Which at least is consistent with her total lack of remembering to do things like eat or feed the ardeur.

Anita is definitely a typical TSTL heroine. I think if I was boinking everything alive and undead I'd remember to use birth control and also do anything to protect myself from STDs. That's just me though. I wouldn't think getting the paranormal clap would be entertaining and I'm too old to have pregnancy scares.

I can never understand that. I take mine when I wake up, which right now is much later in the afternoon, but I left my alarm set to 8:30. So I wake up, take the pill, then go back to sleep. Wow, how difficult.

From: [identity profile] moons-storm.livejournal.com
Yeah, there is the pregnancy scare in Danse Macabre and another one in Blood Noir after her two-day boinkfest in the hotel room with three strangers.

Anita is on the pill, except for the six months she goes missing and she stops taking it, which lays the groundwork for the first pregnancy scare. She also uses a condom once with Jean-Claude (as [livejournal.com profile] dwg says) and once when Nathaniel forces her to wait long enough for him to slip one onto Byron during Incubus Dreams.

But, Anita tends to rely solely on the pill as her form of contraceptive.

Well, technically I made all three of those for myself, and they got nicked; I think stressing over stolen icons is worthless, though. Past commenting to let someone know, I usually forget about it. But, I do randomly put icons up at [livejournal.com profile] seven_people. There's not much there, now, but your interest may be enough to kick me into gear and upload all the ones I have sitting on my drive >.>

If you're looking for anti-LKH icons, I can make some up. I work a job at which I sit on my ass and fuck around online. I've been considering making icons with more if Hamilton's hilarious, non sequitur quotes (http://pics.livejournal.com/naeko/pic/0034y8t0).

No pressure, no hurry, and no obligation. :) But if you do make snarky LKH icons in the future, I would love to have a look.

Im sure I can remember it being mentioned that Weres have fast metabolism making it difficult or them to take meds as their body would burn it up to fast. Since Anita is almost a Were, and seems to have some screwed up hormones/biology going on I wonder if the pill would really be effective as it would on a normal human.

If its still effective for her to use hormonal contraceptives she would probably be safer either getting an implant in her arm which works for up to 3 years at a time, or having one of the kind that is injected every 8-12 weeks, so atleast if she blacks out for days at a time she would still be protected. Also with such a hectic lifestyle I would be suprised if she could remember to take a pill at around the same time everyday.

I suspect I have thought about this a little to much.

I'm sure all the strains of were piss she has in her various holes that her own magical la petite body would metabolism and burn them up until her metabolism started to have an organism from feeling the burn of the sperm protein calories.

i have that implant (ImPlanon). it's 3 years. and it kind of sucks, because i *USED* to have the *BETTER* implant, the NorPlant, that was FIVE years.

how the fuck has *no one* suggested she get an impant, or go on Depo (the shot) or get an IUD (no. wait. "cervix bump" would destroy and IUD. oh dear gods now i need braim AMMONIA) or get her freaking tubes tied

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stupid. it is all so fucking stupid it pisses me off so fucking much.

My legs have unconsciously crossed just THINKING of the agony of cervix bump+IUD. Owowowowow. The ring would likely not work either, as it'd probably end up on someone else. One would think the implant or the shot or even the freakin' patch would be a great idea, but I suspect even LKH hasn't considered it; the Pill is likely radical enough.

And getting her tubes tied? Ha! You're funny. The closet Catholic getting her tubes tied. Tell me another one.

lol - i always forget the Catholic parts... i think because it's always "oh, whine and cry, i cannot be Catholic anymore because the Pope is a big meanie!"

yes. OWOWOWOW!!!

the neuvaring - i had that for some years. there is NO way that it would "end up on someone else" in real life.... but this *IS* LKH. but, just for the record, i was advised *every time* i picked up new ones that i could take them out during sex, so long as i replaced them immediately afterward.

but the Anita would never put it back in, and then... sigh.

it's all so stupid!!!!!!!!!!

I imagine that LKH doesn't have Anita either on the patch or getting a shot simply because it would remove one source of angst that she can periodically throw in. You know like when she needs to bump up the page numbers in her threadbare little stories. If Anita can whine and angst and squabble with potential daddies, make visits to hospitals. That will surely use up a few pages.

I've been wanting her to shove an IUD in there since the middle of NiC. In fact, that amulet that serves as 'keep Mummy Dearest away' that she got from the tigers that she forgets to take with her, well, two birds, one stone...
