It's very red.

"Never before published" - I don't get it. Obviously it's never before published; it's a brand new book. Is there some reason I don't understand for slapping that on the cover?

[identity profile] estllechauvelin.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I see it from time to time, generally on paperback originals that are parts of series that have been published in hardcover.

Ah, okay. I was kind of imagining you might use it for some "lost work," discovered after the author's death, or something like that.

Nora Roberts does that because her stuff gets reprinted from like, the seventies and whatnot, so brand spanking new gets a NR tag on the spine and a Never Before Published up at the tippytop.

[identity profile] dagonista.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha, that makes sense if you've been incredibly prolific.

It looks like a cheesy romance cover, certainly not something I'd be drawn to in the horror section. Needs more Fabio.

[identity profile] apep727.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kinda hoping that book store patrons finding it in the Horror/Sci-fi & Fantasy section tell the staff that they put it in the wrong place. Or that the staff take one look at the cover and put it in the Romance section.

oh wow they've really run out of fucks when it comes to the graphic design. I wonder how long it took to scroll through the stock images to find the background and then go "yeah let's have a giant read swirly hole over the top! DONE PERFECT."

[identity profile] suzycat.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad that, looking at this book, I would know instantly that LKH most certainly does not write romance novels.

I still don't get why she's so obsessed with nipples. To each their own, I guess?

Also the text alignment makes me cringe because it's not off-centre enough to register as right-aligned in my head, and it's not centred enough to be centred. @A@

Why is the artist showcasing his armpit hair?

He turns into a werewolf, gotta have some fur. Blergh.

This is worse than the cheesy photoshopped Mills&Boon covers. The publishers have apparently just given up entirely.

[identity profile] apep727.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
One can only hope that the author will soon follow.

Or at least realize that she's actually been writing Paranormal Romance Soap Opera instead of Super-Dark Action-Packed Urban Fantasy for the past ten years or so.

[identity profile] jessica collett (from livejournal.com) 2014-09-19 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
just look at that. my god. I can't get over how bad that cover is!

[identity profile] fangedsekhmet.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy crap! I've just realised what the cover is!

Yes folks, it's a view outward from the crotch of doom.

And now I can't unsee it.

Yep, that's what it is.

[identity profile] suzycat.livejournal.com 2014-09-23 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I am disappointed. It doesn't look NEARLY as tight or wet as advertised.

[identity profile] bloodredroses1.livejournal.com 2014-09-23 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Tight? As much use as it gets and the size it handles you expect tight?!?

[identity profile] suzycat.livejournal.com 2014-09-23 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But they're always going on about how tight she is!

Maybe it's only relative to their enormodongs.

Oh, man, I had to scroll down fast; my mom's visiting and I'd hate for her to see me looking at something like that.

Who wears a leather jacket over a bare chest? He must be super sweaty.

[identity profile] rekallthegreat.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like a cover to a typical Romance or Erotica book. Not that there's anything wrong with that but I think her publishers are more aware of the genres she writes than LKH herself. She must really be in denial if she looks at that cover and thinks Urban Fantasy which is what she claims to write. It looks nothing like the other covers for Urban Fantasy books which are currently on the market.

[identity profile] apep727.livejournal.com 2014-09-19 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be so sure of that. I think I remember hearing somewhere that she doesn't read UF, despite having "created" it. Which I kind of understand (avoiding other writers influencing your work), but still, if you're going to write in a genre (let alone "create" one), you should at least take a look at what your colleagues are doing.

[identity profile] rekallthegreat.livejournal.com 2014-09-20 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
It would not surprise me at all if that's true and she doesn't read UF. I actually don't think she reads much period. I never see her reccing other authors/books which other authors do in their blogs.

[identity profile] guardians-song.livejournal.com 2014-09-22 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I believe that there was a book with weretigers in Vegas that came out not too long before Skin Trade [and its weretigers in Vegas] came out.

I never see her reccing other authors/books which other authors do in their blogs.
Considering her personality, I don't think Laurell K. Hamilton thinks any series is worthy of recommendation unless it's written by Laurell K. Hamilton.

[identity profile] magdalen77.livejournal.com 2014-09-22 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand came out in February and Skin Trade came out in June of the same year. IDK if Carrie Vaughn does ARCs, but it's not unheard of for LaLa to be still writing a book due out in June in February.

Romance novel covers usually show interaction between the heroine and hero, and while the hero is often shirtless, he also normally has eyes.

This cover looks more like an ad for a strip club than an ad for any kind of book. A guy with a completely waxed chest who is taking off his leather jacket under which he's not wearing anything else. No interaction, just part of a guy's torso which we're supposed to drool over. Which makes this the most honest of LKH's covers.

[identity profile] cryptaknight.livejournal.com 2014-09-20 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of dying at the B&N link being 'Dorothy Hamilton' instead of 'Laurell K Hamilton'.

And yes, that is a terrible cover and I'm still dumbfounded at anyone thinking "Dead Ice" is clever.
