O&F PODCAST, EP. 65: Christmas Bonus Miracle Episode with Laurell K. Hamilton

A BONUS CHRISTMAS EPISODE THAT WAS A HOLIDAY MIRACLE IN THE MAKING! Despite many obstacles, this week I talk with Queen on the Urban Fantasy Throne Laurell K. Hamilton about her long career in a genre she helped to create (after hundreds of rejections) including her Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter and Merry Gentry series.

"in a genre she helped create?"

Well, the Anita Blake books did kind of help establish Urban Fantasy as a thing. A lot of stuff that's been retroactively classified as UF was published as horror, so yeah - LKH did "help create" UF.

I reject calling her the queen, though. That's just the touch too far on a shit sundae.

I agree with both comments so far.

Ahhh, the reclassification thing. I wasn't thinking about that. Yes, that makes perfect sense.

A lot of the conversation was cutting out in the end.

two things:
1) she said that it's dangerous for an author to believe their own hype
2) she said she doesn't understand why people judge her on her personal life because she never made public parts of her life.

does she even live on the same planet?

What parts of her personal life is she keeping quiet then? YIKES.

When she poops?

She said she never made her divorce public and she says she still get grief from people for divorcing her husband when she was unhappy, going back to dating and marrying again.

oh honey, we don't give you grief for divorce, we give you grief because of the timeline that you did share with everyone makes the time between the divorce and the 2nd marriage very short, almost to the point that you had to have been dating Jon during your first marriage.

I don't even particularly care about that except as it relates to her constantly shitting all over her ex-husband, especially through his avatar in the books. Her attitude toward him and their divorce has infested her writing.

Yeah, I could not give less of a shit about how little time she has between marriages. It's the fact she can't keep her issues with the ex out of her writing to such an insane degree.

And I only mock her when she pretends to be a relationship and dating guru, claiming she did all of this dating between marriages. Also when she complains that all of the men around her age couldn't stand her independence, so that's why her boitoi was infinitely superior. Going by her own timeline of when she was divorced and when Jonboi and she got together it's obvious that she didn’t have much time to date around before her second marriage.

It's just more of "I'm the great LaLa, who is an expert on everything". Like claiming she was a virgin sex expert when she was in high school.
