I've started on Dead Ice. I'm trying to get through three or four chapters a day, work permitting. So far it's been an easier slog than Affliction, but looking at the work of my fellow sporkers doesn't lead me to believe it's going to stay that easy.

Because I simply can't stop watching the train wreck, I pushed through this book.  Enjoy this while you wait for the sporkers to get spun up!

Overall verdict: The old "start with a mystery plot for a few chapters, and pick it up in the end chapters" is still alive and well.  I wonder if maybe she should think about doing more short stories, because I think the main mystery plot (concerning zombie porn) and the subplot with the too-real zombie that she raises would have each made a good, strong short story, because that's about the amount of plot and attention devoted to them.  The middle of the book is eaten up with the usual relationship/metaphysics stuff that most of us are just bored by.  Plus, bad wedding planning stuff that doesn't advance that plot at all.  The book also features the traditional 2-3 page epilogue at the end that ties everything up (but Anita didn't get knocked out this time, so progress!) but doesn't actually resolve anything.  Parts of the book dealing with the FBI case appear to have actually been edited.

It's better in some places, and worse in others than the last one.

Snarky bits:  Please note that this includes naughty words.  Spoilers and excerpts under the cuts.  It's pretty lengthy.

Like I said, some improvement, but not enough.

I typed "The End" on Dead Ice last night. It's the first book I ever wrote staring out at the sea, but I think not my last. I've wanted to live by the sea since I was twelve. Today, I'm have that emotional roller coaster that comes with the creative drop after a book is finished. I know it's part of my process now, so I ride it much better than I did years ago. I remember when it first started happening, I wondered what the hell was wrong with me, but now I know. It's been a good day, enjoying staring at the sea and not writing, for a change, but I've done the happy/sad, happy/sad that is part of the first day after, "The End". I've already been talking to my editor in New York, answering some forgotten notes. Soon we'll head home to snow and cold, from our tropical break. It's been great. So glad the next Anita Blake novel is done and you get to read Dead Ice in June!

Here is Laurell's recent interview with Anton Strout of The Once & Future Podcast on Jason, Dead Ice, the difficulties and joys of a 23 book series, and how modern technology can impact both the writing and the real-world experience of a writer.

UK fans:

Many of you were unable to receive a signed copy of Jason as the bookstore we worked with in the US for a limited pre-signing was unable to ship overseas. As this was very unfair, we contacted the UK publisher Headline and they sent us a box of 100 Jason cover postcards that Laurell has signed and sent back to them for her fans.

Contact Caitlin at Headline to see how you can receive one!
