My understanding of "soft science" versus "hard science" (speaking as a writer) is that a soft science is more open to questioning and being disproven. Take sociology or psychology versus chemistry or biology. Chemistry and biology are mathematically, empirically provable. They're based on hard, solid facts. Sociology and psychology, on the other hand, are more fluid sciences, more changeable and more easily disproven.
