scarimonious: "High again, Blake?" "My hands, they were so huge!" (ABVH - hands)
[personal profile] scarimonious
My Google alerts threw me this Q&A with LKH and William McCaskey about their upcoming anthology Fantastic Hope.

In it, LKH mentions that the next ABVH book will be called Sucker Punch and is out August 2020.

From Penguin Random House page:
A brutal murder, a suspect in jail, and an execution planned—but what if the wrong person is about to be killed?

When a fellow U.S. Marshal asks Anita Blake to fly to a tiny community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on an emergency consult, she knows time is running short. When she arrives, there is plenty of proof that a young wereleopard killed his uncle in the most gruesome and bloody way possible. As the mounting evidence points to him, a warrant of execution is already under way.

But something seems off about the murder, and Anita has been asked for her expert opinion on the crime scene. Despite escalating pressure from local cops and the family’s cries for justice for their dead patriarch, Anita quickly realizes that the evidence doesn’t quite add up.

Time is against Anita, as the tight-knit community is up in arms and its fear of supernaturals is growing. She races to uncover the truth and determine whether the Marshals have caught the killer or are about to execute an innocent man—all in the name of justice.
This is the first I've seen of it since *checks tags* February 2019.

If you just can't wait for the 11 October release, there's a small snippet of Crimson Death online here.

Despite all the hype about Edward and Ireland and cool stuff actually happening, they've chosen to showcase a pretty generic and unsexy sex scene, but with Damian in it, along with Nate and Anita.

Based on the excerpt, she still hasn't learned anything about specific words for sex scenes ("his body" ahoy!) or the idea that images of a person being like "meat between his teeth" is NOT SEXY, especially after early books when bodies were described as just so much meat.  I get that she's trying to tap into the whole shifters = animalistic deal but it's not quite working.

Especially this week's. Remember the whole wtf moment in Dead Ice about how Anitaverse men apparently only think women take showers in order to ask for sex? Oglaf's latest made me spit my tea on the keyboard this morning. Someone needs to send this to Anita, stat!

Note - Oglaf is always funny as hell, but is almost never SFW.

I've started on Dead Ice. I'm trying to get through three or four chapters a day, work permitting. So far it's been an easier slog than Affliction, but looking at the work of my fellow sporkers doesn't lead me to believe it's going to stay that easy.

They're worth the read despite being a lot of the same ol' same ol' from LKH. I've included some of the more...special highlights. This is a great time to start playing LKH bingo. Or drinking.

Ten Terrifying Questions via Booktopia:

6. Please tell us about your latest novel…

A Shiver of Light is the first Meredith (Merry) Gentry novel in over four years. In re-reading the other eight novels in the series I discovered something I hadn’t known before, that the first seven books are really an epic political fantasy series a la George R. R. Martin except with more mystery, sex, and less killing off of main characters.

No Going Back: An Exclusive Interview with Laurell K Hamiton via Barnes & Noble

Readers, especially series-loving readers, don’t like too much change. I actually like character growth and change in a series, but I seem to be in the minority; most people like series to be like a brand name product that does the same thing every time, reliable. When the Anita Blake series changed, it made some readers feel betrayed, because their happy place was now an uncomfortable place for them, and uncomfortable isn’t happy for most people. Uncomfortable is the beginning of growth and change in real life and fictional; a lot of readers were thrilled with the new direction, but the ones that weren’t honestly did feel betrayed. Because I don’t feel that way as a reader, I had no way to anticipate it as a writer, so I wandered blissfully off the path and into the woods, only to find that some of the fans had turned into haters. In their minds they felt I had started the “fight,” because I took their beloved world and characters and changed them into people they didn’t enjoy anymore. In my mind I didn’t know there was a problem, until the first hate-filled spewing began. Now, most of my readers, and legions of new fans, have loved, and continue to love how Anita’s personal life and world have opened up, but I understand some of the hatred now. It won’t make it go away, or make me change what I write, or how, but I think I understand some of why it started in the first place.

Superspeak: An Interview with Laurell K Hamilton via Searching for Superwomen

I’ve lost count of the number of women who tell me that they didn’t know a woman could enjoy sex, until they read my books. Or the number of women who are angry at me, because sex is never that good in real life, and only their friends who were with them at the signings, assuring them that no, really sex really was that. The women who get angry about the sex not being realistic are always wearing wedding rings.

I realize LKH had nothing to do with Charmed. I just thought the community might enjoy these reviews. Mostly because the reviewer notes many similar points about Charmed: the heroes are really the villains, narcissism, feminism fail, logic fails, male abuse, and all kinds of snark.

There's more for the other seasons, but I didn't want to flood the board, and I wasn't certain how interested you'd be.

Happy watching and discussion.

It's worse than we predicted. I did a really loose sporking of it here while reading it, as that was the only way I could get through it. It is deadly dull.

There are many pages of suburban children learning ballet steps. There is no crimesolving, no action, and no sex, though there are many pages about Nathaniel being a stripper and some Unfortunate Implications regarding the kid Matthew. All the characters but Anita, Micah, and Nathaniel are human, and they could be replaced with full humans with no effect on the plot, such as it isn't. I do not know who LKH wrote this book for. Perhaps she is trying to alienate the last of her fans.

(I hope it's okay to post this here.)
