I typed "The End" on Dead Ice last night. It's the first book I ever wrote staring out at the sea, but I think not my last. I've wanted to live by the sea since I was twelve. Today, I'm have that emotional roller coaster that comes with the creative drop after a book is finished. I know it's part of my process now, so I ride it much better than I did years ago. I remember when it first started happening, I wondered what the hell was wrong with me, but now I know. It's been a good day, enjoying staring at the sea and not writing, for a change, but I've done the happy/sad, happy/sad that is part of the first day after, "The End". I've already been talking to my editor in New York, answering some forgotten notes. Soon we'll head home to snow and cold, from our tropical break. It's been great. So glad the next Anita Blake novel is done and you get to read Dead Ice in June!

The deal I made with my editor was that I'd work on the copy edits for, A Shiver of Light, on my birthday, in exchange for getting to have a long weekend over Valentine's Day. I've been too sick to work on them today, but they are waiting on my desk for tomorrow morning. I'll work on the small queries first, and then the minor/major rewrites last, so the page numbers don't change between the printed out copy and the computer file. I have until the 24th to finish and deliver them back to New York.

Do I hear, Mission Impossible, music? Or maybe circus music?

22 pages on Merry. I can finally sleep. Close to the end, but not there, yet. Goodnight, everyone, I'm off to finally cuddle up with Jon on this chill winter's night.

Neither Merry, nor I, can shake the melancholy of the last scene. It's made it a very sad day of writing, but the deadline is upon me & I'll be writing into the night, because it's down to the wire. Please don't tell me to rest, or to not push, because if I miss the deadline that is only days away, I'll miss the pub date & you won't get A Shiver of Light in early June. So, wish me good luck & happy hunting, because I am going to do everything I can to make the date & get this book in your hands on June 3, 2014, as scheduled.

"When I feel difficulty coming on, I switch to another book I'm writing. When I get back to the problem, my unconscious has solved it." - Isaac Asimov

And then there comes the moment when deadlines and life combine to make you need something less art and more craft.

"There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein." - Red Smith

Somedays are a "let my unconscious work on it" day, and some are "open a vein" days. Sadly today is the latter, not the former, but the writing gets done either way.

Thank you so much for all the offers to work for me. It's very flattering, really appreciate it, but my PA is fabulous, so that's not the position. Sometimes throwing more person-power at a problem isn't the answer, so we'll try something else. Thanks for everyone who sent in resumes, or links to their websites, but there is no position to fill. Again, thanks for all the interest, but I think we've decided that more hands, do not light work make.

Weeks out from deadline for Merry book, A Shiver of Light, and things are getting serious. I wrote until late, thirteen pages done, got to bed at 2AM, alarm went off at 5AM. I've done a full day of writing, don't even want to count pages, it'll just make me tired. Three hours of sleep has not been enough. I actually cancelled gym, because I must finish this scene regardless of how many pages it takes before I sleep tonight, so I'm writing instead of lifting weights, but its the difference between getting to bed by 9PM - 10PM, or 12AM - 1AM.

I'm purposefully stripping myself down through tiredness and force of will to get through this part of the book. If I gain enough momentum here I'll have the energy reserves to finish this race on time. If you think a deadline is not a race, then you aren't a series writer. It's a very different career rhythm than a "regular" novelist.

It's an absolutely beautiful day here, sunny, warm, highs in the low 70's, but I'm in my office writing. I felt a little punished to not be with my family enjoying the day, but then make myself think, I'm getting paid to write, the job I've wanted since I was about fourteen. I'm making a great living as an artist, when most of us barely get by, which is also awesome. I get to play with my imaginary friends, and it's like a grownup job - how cool is that?

Yes, I'd rather go play today, spend time with Jon and our daughter, Trinity, but that won't get the Merry book written, and it won't meet my deadline so you can read A Shiver of Light in June 2014. Our friend Sam is coming over later and if I'm diligent now, and finish this scene, make my page count, then I can take a break and visit with family and friends later, but for now I write. There's a Merry and Galen scene to finish. :-)

Wow, guys, thanks for all your answers on what Nathaniel should use as a pet name for Anita. I've skimmed them, but truly reading nearly 1,500 comments may have to wait until after I finish copy edits. *laughs* Seriously, overwhelmed by your enthusasim and how much you love my imaginary friends. A few of you suggested that Nathaniel wouldn't have a pet name for Anita & since nothing has worked, I'm going with that for this book. I'll look over your suggestions & post my thoughts later. We can use the nickname in a later book, if I find one I lke.

I will be at St. Louis ComiCon this Saturday only. Not only will I be doing a Q & A, but I thought I might read from first chapter of Affliction either before, or after some questions. I can't remember the last time I read at a con, but I thought you guys might enjoy it. Also, we are looking for an artist to help us do Lunatic Cafe as a graphic novel. Before someone asks, Brett Booth is currently under contract at DC, so we can't use him, but him being unaviable means some other artist has a chance to come play. Show Jon & I your samples, and be as serious about your deadlines as I am about mine, and lets do this.

Copyedits for Affliction have begun in earnest. They're due back March 22, which is this Friday. *Ah!* This is a chance not only for grammar & spelling, but also to change a new character's name if they had a placeholder name until I could think of a better one. Our wonderful continuity editor, Missy, who has only come on board since Kiss the Dead will help me make sure people don't keep growing & shrinking a few inches from book to book, and eye color. *rolls eyes* Why do I keep chaning some character's eye color? Also time line issues. *sigh*
