This is Anita being sure that everyone knows this was JUST a friend who was female, not a girlfriend in the "lesbian!!!" manner. Either that, or Anita was unable to form coherent sentences at that point. There's no need to write a character's inability to speak properly, though, you could just say, "she stuttered," rather than going "I-I-I-I w-w-w-w-ant..."
