Apologies to everyone on my f-list that I spammed about this - but remember when LKH said that she was in talks about an AB:VH movie? Turns out it's really happening.
The 16-books-and-counting Blake novels by Laurell Hamilton include elements familiar to fans of True Blood (vampires are part of regular society) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (tough young female fights supernatural forces). The project will be adapted by Glen Morgan (X-Files, Final Destination), who also serves as executive producer along with Courtney Solomon (Dungeons and Dragons).
I loved X-Files but hated D&D, so I'm of the opinion that the two producers cancel each other out.  I'll be keeping an ear to the internets for updates as they come.

The comments on the article are hilarious.

But WTF, IFC? Is it really INDEPENDENT if freaking LIONSGATE is producing it?

Oh Glen, why are you doing this? I used to like you so much. No you do this.
Maybe they'll just concentrate on the decent early books and leave the bad porn alone. We can only hope.

I think this could go either way, depending highly on which books they decide to draw from and how much say LKH has on the final thing (and who's writing the script... is that what the "adapted by" guy is for?)

Clearly it won't be oscar quality, but I'm hopeful it will at least be watchable

Oh wow.

All I really care about, if I can stomach seeing the movie, is who is playing Jean-Claude because can any man on earth really look that ethereally beautiful and sexy while wearing a frou frou puffy shirt?

I mean, besides Johnny Depp, Nathan Fillion, Daniel Craig, Travis Fimmel, and Takeshi Kaneshiro. ^_~

According to http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/03/ifc-anita-blake-vampire-hunter.html it will focus on the early books.

Me too. Think she'll insist on writing the script with Jon like with the comic adaption , or that she should be the one playing Anita?

Oh, boy, I'm already feeling sorry for whoever does end up playing Anita.

Can you imagine what LKH would be like as a consultant? She won't let the people who know what they're doing do it (like she's doing with the AB comics at the moment)!

Maybe we will have a Comics like movie ??? OOooooh... maybe they take the scenario from there. *dreamy*.... well, not, I don't dream AB, because my Dreams Are Always Super Complexe and Cool. And rarelly have sex in it. The're too rapide, vivid and curious for that...

Angel, Buffy and so on where not on my top list, totally not. True blood is not as good as the books, and I don't comment on Anne Rice, because that was my first Bit-Lit, and it's too long far away for that. But if they can make a good movie like the Interview, I will not say No. Provided they don't try to wash down.
Aaahh, but the potential is so high. It's a shame it's not an english that make it. They're very good, even if they don't have the technical goods (see Jekyll, Dr Who, and other that I don't know the english names).
Yep, very good. *sigh*

I'm pretty sur it's because the english makers have no qualms to be distrubing, sad, and have a bad ending. (no thinking of Harry potter, because that just Argh, Rowling was just stealing the idea from Horowitz, I'm pretty sur, and make a sweet thing with it for her kids.

I stop rambling. I have to finish my Nid d'Abeille for tomorrow.

Interesting. So, is it going to be a made-for-TV-movie, or a straight to DVD? Hard to tell, from reading those. I have a really hard time believing that it's going to be in theaters.

According to the Sci-Fi article, it's going to be the first TV-movie for IFC. I'm not too crazy about Solomon's involvement (hated Dungeons and Dragons, thought his other movie had some noticable flaws) but Morgan helped write some classic X-Files and Millennium episodes. So yeah . . . guess we'll see what happens.

"The Independent Film Channel is teaming with Lionsgate for a TV movie based on the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books, according to The Hollywood Reporter."

Lionsgate? As in the leading producer of cheap sequel gorn? Somehow I'm not surprised by this.

Though... all of those recent Saw-like covers might have had a hidden meaning behind them leading up to this adaptation.

Erg. Can't say I've ever seen a good made for TV movie. I'm going to have to agree with some of the other folks, and say they'd be much better off making it a series.

>>Though... all of those recent Saw-like covers might have had a hidden meaning behind them leading up to this adaptation.<<

I think you nailed it right there. If the audience for the movie is young males, they will have to make some changes in the early AB books like sexing up Anita and de-sissifying the men.

After any movie/show comes out there is always a jump in the book sales and if they want the men to be buying them they have got to fix up the covers. I always thought LKH's reason for changing the covers was weird - that she wanted to stand out from the crowd but copies the imagery from another genre.

I bet that all the old covers will be replaced by the new style by the time the movie is released.

I see a comic-like-movie being baaaaad. Just b/c I had a horrible image of her yelling at some official movie-person, going, "I want it to EDGY! Like Sin CIty! But edgier! And darker. B/c I'm totally cool and hip and NOTnotNOT out of my 20's I SWEAR. EDGY!"

*shudder*
