It's that whole, not wanting to be responsible for yourself and your behavior thing. I think that's also why hypnosis-crime is still a trope even though Hollywood hypnosis isn't really a thing.
That said...NIC is really REALLY disturbing when I try to think about WHY LKH would have written that scene that way.
