Ditto. My character has limited powers. She can't just up and whup the ass of any ole body. Most of the time, she outsmarts them or has enough sense to bring back up. She gets her ass kicked a lot, but she always pulls through due to sheer stubborness and determination, not magical hoo-hah magic.
Which also reminds me of another pet peeve: having the big strong menses saving the heroine too much. Saving her a few times is necessary, but after a certain point, it makes her seem like she can't do anything on her own. The reverse is also dangerous territory: having the men be too weak to save themselves also reflects badly on their characters. It's a fine line to walk, but it's worth it if you do it right.
Normal is underrated! We need more normal folks in urban fantasies. It's a nice change of pace.
