http://blog.laurellkhamilton.org/2007/07/hardback-collection-is-on-shelves.html
This is my first time doing a flog though I've lurked a long time, but I just had to laugh and comment because she makes it all too easy. Not to mention its short so if its not the greatest flog then oh well. LKH in italics and me in bemusement.
The beginning is her going on about the release of the comic in hard-back form with a bonus Anita Blake short story. Can I call for a moment of silence for the money that will be wasted? *silence* Perhaps a tear for the fact Jon collaborated on it? *tear* Anyway moving on...
It's probably the shortest Anita story I will ever write, and definitely the shortest mystery. I'd begun to wonder if I'd lost the knack of writing short.
You see I was beginning to wonder if she'd lost the knack of writing long books, and does the word Micah come to mind for anyone or maybe the "word" 'novel-lite' (*cough*NOVELLA*coughcough*).
I am thankful that my muse and I like novels, because it's a whole lot easier to make a living at novel length than short stories.
Aha! I finally get it! That's why she drags out a scene that could take two sentences into five pages its all about the 'novel length'. It might also explain the poor dress of the characters; after all, the crazier the out-fit the more words she can use.
That's kind of sad though it just kind of goes to show that she's mostly writing the books for money now rather than enjoyment don't you all think? Of course its been seemingly suspected for some time now, but that's nearly admitting to it.
I ken it, a good old Scottish term.
I ken its random. Not to mention lay off Roland Deschain-isms (if you've read the Dark Tower series by Stephen King you'll know what i mean).

Ken, yeah. Means "know" as far as I ever knew. But then, this is the woman who still dresses her men in thigh-high boots. And ruffles, and lace. I can live with the long hair, I have a thing for long-haired guys, well, cept for Nate's sweeping the floor, that IS excessive, but...
Actually, the Anita-verse would have been better off as a graphic novel series. Those are to the point. But she'd have found a way to drag a sex scene over 7 or 8 pages, just like she does with the written word. And not even good ones.

Date: 2007-07-06 05:59 pm (UTC)I'm glad that people got my DT reference :). I think its her ego trying to tell us that she's as good as SK just because she uses words like him. Which is the point where I roll my eyes.

Date: 2007-07-06 06:20 pm (UTC)Cheaper and less effort than buying a broom and sweeping the floor. Kitchen needs a sweep? Just get Nate to walk around with his hair loose!

Date: 2007-07-07 04:06 pm (UTC)I have absolutely no doubt that this is true. She's running on creative fumes at this point, and drags out every scene she can in order to make her word count.
What's amazing to me is that despite all this ridiculous padding, her books are still getting shorter and shorter as they go along.
