I'm pretty sure that what she was trying to say in the second bit is along the lines of what you were getting at. Translation: The dog's your companion for life- maybe not for your life, but for the dog's life. Which would make more sense if she was clearer on the unlikelihood that a dog is going to outlive you unless you get the dog when you're pretty old... well, and if she made more sense in general.
