Actually, there's a very good and also very unfortunate (oxymoron, I know, bear with me) reason not to get certain pets at a shelter. When I say shelter, I don't mean places like the SPCA, either.
You can bring home some pretty bad illnesses. For example, you can bring feline leukemia, not just into your own home but into others, as well. It's contagious and pretty horrible for cats to go through.
There's a lot of issues when it comes to pets without homes, and one of them is that people often can't afford to get their pets fixed. Then said pets get out and then next thing you know, oodles of puppies or kittens. It would help a lot if getting one's pet fixed was easier.
