Having turned down the throne of Faerie, and pregnant at last with twins by the men she loves, ex-princess Meredith Gentry should be living happily-ever-after. But the exiles of Faerie have other ideas - they want Meredith to be their princess, whether she likes it or not. And the new political party in England, the Fey Independence Party, want the lands of Faerie back, and they've asked Meredith to come home to be their faerie Prime Minister. They won't give up without a fight. With the government of the two countries blaming her for political unrest, happy ever after for half-human, half-faerie Meredith is going to have to wait, as she is caught in a struggle that threatens her life and the lives of those she holds dear. But she's a fighter, and she wields a wild magic...

Dear Lord. This book will suck harder than Anita after skipping lunch. Does LKH write these horrible things?

Same. I found the politics intriguing, and I usually don't find politics interesting.

The idea that Merry just gives up and has her magickal baybees with the men and magickal cake and eat it too was always a bit lame. OTOH, it's funny about what you wish for. Merry was all "I am taunted and shunned for my failure to be sufficiently Sidhe wah totes not BITTER or anything" and then kerblow, most important person in the Faerie World Evar and she's all "wah" over that as well.

Why must she drag things to my country? WHY?

I can't wait to see how badly she butchers England and British stuff.

I was thinking the exact same thing. And I am crying inside. Because, no doubt, it will be awful.

Although I will probably heartily laugh at how wrong she gets stuff. Y'know, once I've got over being upset about it.

I totally giggled at the line, "pregnant with twins by the MEN she loves". I can just picture some poor editor going, wait, what?!, and then having it explained. Which would be even worse. Oh LKH. For me, her biggest problem is that she can't decide on just one thing. Instead of ONE great guy, lets have 20! Instead of having to FINALLY make a decision about plot and storyline and actually take the series somewhere beyond porn, lets prolong this farce and have her be pregnant by everybody!
i'm still going to read it, but i will definitely hate myself in the morning.

Part of LKH's problem is she's always trying to do too much with one character. It always has to be Merry/Anita that does everything, saves everyone, knows everything, defeats the villain. The other characters never get a chance to contribute in any meaningful way. Merry/Anita always has to be center stage because they're "the camera" as LKH has put it. When really it's ineffective storytelling. It's possible to write a first person story and not have it be a Sue, plenty of other authors are able to do it. LKH can't seem to get it through her head though.

This. Where do I sign up for being a fairy princess?

As for Merry, I think the 'reluctant princess' is one of the most annoying cliches. It's like LKH went out of her way to make Merry the Uber Sue. The reluctant *fairy* princess. Oi.

I thought originally the Merry series was suppose to end with Merry being Queen. That was the whole point, it had a definitive ending to work towards.

The world had so much potential, I just wish someone else could play with it and make it live up to said potential.

I bet anything that somehow the twins actually DO have more than one father...through some super speshul snowflake magic of some sort.(If they do already sorry I gave up on the series the 3rd book in)

This CANNOT be the "new" Merry, can it? GEEEEEEEEZ, doesn't want to be the UnSeelie Queen, isn't interested in the Seelie Court throne either - and NOW, she's going to be the FOREIGN Prime Minister to an attempted Fae TAKEOVER? In BRITAIN?

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ

Wasn't all the fey exiled from Europe and that's why they moved to the USA? The new 'Fey Independence Party' won the national election? On what platform?? Why would humans vote for them? The only platform that would be reasonable is that their Independence means them leaving the country and now these countries (who barely tolerate them) are going to fight to keep/get Merry?

If the FIP didn't run in the national elections, then who cares what they want? If the Fey in England use democracy to vote in their PM than why are they now trying to force someone into the job?

My head hurts.

I just had a horrid thought about the twins. What gender will they be? If there's a girl, how long before she gets a massive heel-turn?

Date: 2009-07-11 10:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mystoflare.livejournal.com
I think the twins will never be born. Because, you know, in Laurell-land, motherhood just ain't sexy, nor is pregnancy/nursing. So Merry will probably get into a catfight with some Evil Jealous Hater Bitch and miscarry, and all the penii will comfort her that it Wasn't Her Fault (though I bet she starts the fight, like an idiot).

On the other hand, if, miracle of miracles, Merry's offspring DO make it to birth...you're right if one or both are girls. That she pimps out and lets all the guys rape, because that's all women are good for in LKH-land.
Personally, I'd say boys, both of 'em. Who grow up as ungodly fast as the Loch Ness Monster, so they can boink Mommy in seven years (because it's not illegal in the human world if they look over the age of consent! *barf*). Or they're crazy rapist men, who rape Mommy and she comes to LURVE them, too.

Maybe it's the Monster Raving Loony party using a fake name. I can see them claiming to have a fairy princess for party leader.

Although to be honest, if it were a choice between Merry and the BNP I say bring on the fairies.

Okay, I never touched the Merry series, so somebody please explain this to me.

And the new political party in England, the Fey Independence Party, want the lands of Faerie back [...]

A fairy party? In England? Are we talking about normal vagualy modern day England here? Why... why would anyone even vote for them, anyonye human, I mean, which I guess is still the biggest part of the population?
Actually, I'd totally want to see fairies ruling England. I wonder what their take on the global economical crisis is. Could they fix it with sparkly fairydust?

Also, I don't care how much sense it will make in the context of the book; "faerie prime minister" just sounds completely ridiculous.

From: [identity profile] artemis-rex.livejournal.com
Wait, wait, wait ... I thought the WHOLE POINT OF THE SERIES was that Merry becomes Queen in order to make sure she and her loved ones are safe or else Andais or Cel (who both are way cooler and more interesting than Merry) can chop her up into sparkly fairy bits. I thought that Andais out-and-out TOLD her that she wants to kill her and tried to drown her as a child.

I bet this is another one of those books that totally fakes a plot. You know like a stroke of midnight which was 200 pages detailing 4 hours of her day and a plot was only wrapped up in the last 10 pages. Ugh.
