If the first comment, supposedly by Richelle Mead, is legit, I'm a bit amused... mostly because most authors in the "paranormal romance" circuit don't seem to have the guts to say anything about LKH.
I don't know what her adult series are like; I've only read her YA series, Vampire Academy. It's not earth-shaking, but it's better than a lot of the supernatural YA out there.
And it's that difference/ originality of the types of supernatural presented there that makes me want to read more of them. I remember I rather liked the first book (thought it was good but not earth shattering good) and I keep going back to that series because it is different and I like it more and more. Although the main love intrest annoys me now but still.. a good read, decent plots, flawed interesting characters.
The YA series on the other hand is not my cup of tea. All the main characters annoy me there. :(
Her succubus books are not great, but not awful either. They are worth reading. Her succubus character actually feels bad about sucking the life out of good guys. She tends to go after the bad guys and gets in trouble with her bosses. There's angels, demons, imps, vampires and nephilim in her books. Pretty interesting stuff.
I especially love how he notes how JC is not exactly the most imposing figure -- yeah, he may have vampirey strength, which clearly isn't that impressive because Anita is considered a viable threat. But if you took someone wearing leather skintight pants and boots and a floofy poet's shirt as your bodyguard into a hardcore redlight district, you'd have to be prepared for a bunch of dudes offering him fifty dollars to come back to their motel room.
But she has to show how tuff and witty Anita is! I mean, how cool is Anita? How dare they want to cut out some of her precious jewel-like words of tuffness!
Too bad she doesn't back it up: thinking a penguin bath is more interesting than taking down a zombie, getting a chaperone for her trip to the red light district and waiting for an appointment when a real badass would either muscle their way through, sneak in or use their charm\force of personality to do it.
I sincerely hope he'll start doing these for the Twilight graphic novel that's coming out: http://shelf-life.ew.com/2009/07/15/twilight-comic-book-manga/
Oh boy, Meyer is intricately involved in reviewing it? Joy of joys!
