You definitely have to have a MS for any job worth having (particularly in this economy). I actually work through a university and am working on my PhD as well, which is the only way you ever get to be in charge of any research or have a job that's not full-time field. That's not saying its a market full of geniuses, it's just a very saturated field so employers/agencies can be very picky.
