I grew up in a rural area. I don't know why LKH is trying to reinforce the Hollywood lie that rural areas are filled with innocent naive aw-shucks folks, because UM. One thing about rural areas is how easy it is to hide stuff. I had friends from cities, and their stories couldn't hold a candle to those of the rural kids in the creepy department. A lot of the darkness from the rural kids' stories was from personal experience, too. Maybe LKH didn't have any friends, so she has all these assumptions about what the other kids were like that are completely untrue.
