There's an interesting clip on the right-hand side on YT with various screen tests for Scarlett and Melanie, and it's interesting to me how much more "stereotypical" and harsh the accents of the other actresses are. I don't know how upper class Southern ladies speak but I am pretty sure it's closer, actually, to Vivien Leigh's super English take on it than some of those others, which sound really hick-like to my untutored ear. I mean they are posh, right?
I have Southern friends who eyeroll endlessly at the accents used to represent them in movies and TV. Apparently they are generally very bad.
