From the Amazon.com review of Danse Macabre, which I hadn't even realized came out today:
That Anita has no detecting to do may disappoint some fans...
and
When the vampire ballet takes the stage toward the end, several new plot elements emerge. The very lack of a finale suggests that there's no end in sight for this fabulously imagined series.
Would you all care to join me in a hearty *headdesk*?

Date: 2006-06-28 04:22 am (UTC)And, holy crap, the one review that's up is NOT encouraging. O.O
Anita doesn't fire her gun even once in this entire novel. She also never uses her knives. Detectives Dolph and Zerbrowski don't appear and aren't mentioned. Ronnie has one scene at the start, but that's it; she isn't referred to again.
*HEADDESK*
Anita cries about things pretty often, in general, but this was the first time you really see her start having a serious, real mental breakdown.
O RLY?
Anita gains some nifty powers using her necromancy; these new abilities are acquired late in the book and are sort of glossed over...
SHOCKED, I TELL YOU.
The lack of a crime investigation and any real fight scenes somehow made the huge amount of sex going on a little less palatable. [...] Almsot all she did, this book, was have sex, worry about her pregnancy, and alternatively comfort/argue with the men around her.
*HEADDESKSQUARED*
That's just...I wash my hands of supporting this fucking series and its author. I'm not even buying a new copy in paperback...I'll get mine second-hand.

Date: 2006-06-28 09:14 am (UTC)Saw Danse Macabre on sale. Shuddered and avoided it, revolted just looking at it. The mere sight of the cover melted my eyes. I couldn't believe it was actually out. Didn't think it would come out until July.
*winces*
You know, I used to eagerly snatch up her books in the old days...now I cringe every time I see them. And yes, the vampire ballet was a cool concept. Too bad LKH has to ruin it for us all. Hell, she kind of ruined erotica for me. I used to like it, now I like it a little less.
I still lament the fall of my once favorite series. I now cling to fanfiction more tightly than ever.
And that one review in here...it sounded, dare I say, almost nice. Certainly more generous than the piece of garbage that is this book. I might pick up the paperback version, should I be able to pluck up my courage to do so.
Wish me luck then. In the meantime, I have many other novels to keep myself occupied with. Writers that haven't gone crazy. Like Kim Harrison, for example. She's a great replacement for Anita Blake. Read her, she's good.

Date: 2006-06-28 09:25 am (UTC)I own it and read the summary/outline that
I liked the first one, but I'm scared of the third one because the second one was so badly written and/or edited.
Otherwise, the only series I read since Anita went wacko are Harry Potter, the In Death series by JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts, but I don't like her other books) and the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Date: 2006-06-28 04:43 pm (UTC)I will be disappointed if a lot of the x_core fans do not desert.
I need this book, like, NOW. It's like having a front row seat to the apocalypse. I'm enjoying watching the fandom implode.
Still, who here is actually surprised that A) there's no detecting - y'know, other than "whose penis is that?" - or B) the ballet, the whole reason for the book to exist, is pushed to the rear and glossed over?
Anyone? Beuller?
