So did anyone notice:

in the dedication of Incubus Dreams, she dedicated it to her grandmother, who apparently raised her. Her grandmother's last name was Gentry. Is this news to anyone else? Because I had no idea she named Merry after her own family name.

Also, I got through skimming the first chapter and had to put the book down and read some Neil Gaiman instead to soothe the righteous anger I felt on Ronnie's behalf. Any self-respecting female, upon being treated like that by her supposed best friend, would tell her to FUCK OFF soundly and walk out. Clearly, LKH knows nothing about best friends.

As far as I know, her use of the Gentry name is fairly well documented. Yet another one of her Mary Sue symptoms.

I'm beginning to think LKH doesn't understand women period. She keeps saying that she writes sex scenes for women, but if you look at it, how often does Anita have sex for fun, or Merry for that matter? It's usually because of the ardeur or to seal an alliance or to soothe someone's feelings or to get pregnant. It's never just for fun and enjoyment.

Also, whichever woman it is, but especially Anita, tends to just lie there and wait for the guy to hit the Magic Spot then continue hitting it until he "brings her screaming". It sounds highly monotonous to me.

Han icon. Hehe.

Really, if you sit back and consider Anita's attitude towards sex, it's clearly ridiculously Catholic and almost a sin to do anything else but treat it as bad if one isn't married. She claims to like to move during sex, but most of the scenes are of "pin thrust thrust G-spot SCREAM WET PANT" and not much else backing up the statement. And she spent so much time defending her "no sex until marriage" ideals that you have to wonder if it isn't Laurell's own Catholicism spontaneously combusting as she goes mad in an orgy of bad sex.

Seriously. The woman needs therapy.

I think... been a few years since I read that one so correct me if I'm wrong. It just seems that's the only time she ever did it for something approaching fun; after that, it had to have a purpose.

Actually, her entire relationship with Jean-Claude, though brief, seems ridiculously healthy in retrospect. They had fun, they took care of each other -- the restaurant scene in Burnt Offerings is still one of my favorites of the series. It's so deliciously tender, in Real!Anita's ass-backwards way of being grumpy at the waiter and JC's pouty puppy eyes at her not finishing the whipped cream. From their sleeping together in Killing Dance to their last meeting in Blue Moon, Anita freakin' Blake was actually in a relationship that did NOT involve A) angst over sex, B) agnst over penis size, or C) a harem.

And then it all got shot to hell.

I'm not defending LKH, but is it possible she wrote the MG series just so she could use "Gentry"? Other than as a way to be more Sue-ish.

It has long been used to represent the fae. That is why I cant use it when I scribble wee fae stories. She stole it. Now noone can use it without a comparison or rabid fangirlies screaming for our heads.

*gives fairiethistle a genuinely sympathetic look*

I'm sorry. That bitch, had to ruin fairies for you, didn't she?

No really, I mean that.

Just...she hogs the MYTHOLOGY and thinks it ALL belongs to her, just because she happens to share the name. I still can't believe nerve of this lady.

Thanks a lot LKH. While you're trying to ruin vampires and fey, why not ruin unicorns for us too while you're at it? And bastardize other mythologies to suit your purposes, like you did with Sirens?

*Hates LKH*

Sorry to carry on so, I ranted a bit. Meh. She just pisses me off so.

Don't say it, next you know we'll have Anita the Were-Unicorn.

I wonder what kind of title she'd get as queen of those.

God only knows.

And she would probably ruin unicorns for me.

And my childhood, since The Last Unicorn was a favorite of mine when I was little. Still is. And I just got the original novel by Peter S. Beagle.

And if LKH incorporates were-unicorns into her books, then I'll probably have to burn my copy of the book, because that will be one more thing that I love that she will destroy with her awful writing and equally bad porn.

Poor unicorns. I pray for their safety. I get the feeling that LKH is setting out to destroy all that is good and pure in this world. Or at least in fantasy.

Run unicorns! Run while you still can! Before she gets her evil clutches on you! Flee!

Because you totally know she'd use that horn for purposes best left unsaid.

Unimairenlakerweyna.

*snortgiggle*

Cute. :p

Oh God, I can almost picture it. Anita the wereunicorn.

Maybe when LKH is feeling extra speshul, she'll make little Anita-Sue one. ;)

Seriously. No one mention unicorns to LKH if you should meet her. How much crazier and fucked up can this series get?

Don't answer that.

I knew Merry was Mary-Sue but I did have some hopes for a plot.
I also hope to look like Michelle Pfeiffer, but that aint happening either.

there is a plot in the merry books but there is also a secondary plot as well. First you have the obvious that there is a competition for the throne. (first one pregnant wins) Then there is the power rising in merry herself. And as the books progress so do her powers. But what she will do with them is still up in the air. All that is known is that when she is done there will be a whole new bunch of god's and one pissed off Queen.!!!

I see the MG books following the same path as the AB books. Sex over everything. Sex for no apparent reason. Badly written sex for no reason.
Yes, Merry heals by sex but why have a queen when she is going to fuck every male and make them a god? Will Merry be elevated to Queen of the Gods? Sort of defeats the purpose. How will the gods feel? Gods by their very nature tend to egotistical. They are going to kow-tow to some half mortal queen?

I was hoping for court intrigue, fae history, spies, murder, mayhem, blood and gore on a larger scale. We are getting so little of the "meat" of a story but lots of sex, screaming, and inconsistent time lines.
Kinda like AB only the chaacters have different names.
Plots crumble and disappear in LKH's books because they are beaten to death with penises. I have Penis Plot Phobia now.

that is one good thing,
she cannot hog it, when it is a proven part of the real legends
She cannot even get through with the claim of copyright infringement cause those legends are from a time before she wrote
she might still try but meh, she can try if she wants
maybe some of the werewolf movies would like to sue her, too

Oh don't say that, I'm still reeling from when the White Wolf Gaming Studios sued SONY for making the movie Underworld.

It was SAD. Really, really sad. I even got to read the list of items they were suing for (WW had the bad taste to make it public for a short time) and it was...so...ugh. SAD.

Not to mention stupid. :P

*Stares*

White Wolf SUED Sony for making Underworld???

I LIKED Underworld! I thought it was a cool movie! I want to see the sequel.

Just...oh my GOD you're kidding me!

*dies laughing*

What was the list of what they were suing them for?

I want to see it. You've got me interested. Can you tell me Mule?

*perks up, intrigued*

I don't believe it. WHY did White Wolf sue them in the first place?

reading the book farther would have put you in a state of rage! This is the first time I can't find a way to defend her. She has taken something that seemed to be actually on a path and shit it up so that no one knew what was going on by the end. Above that where the hell did the plot go? I think it escaped out of my book when I wasn't looking.
