I think that, even with the mess of OB, Edward is still the most consistent character in the series. I think that Richard is probably the sort that can suppress trauma very well. Now that he has to deal with Anita's anger management issues leeching into his own personality, it could be claimed that more of what he managed to suppress before is coming to the surface. Also, there's the point that the series was only supposed to be a trilogy, therefore when he was first introduced he was never supposed to go past that book....
Anyway, not that I'm defending LKH or anything, I just think that if LKH was better about gay stuff than there'd be a lot more in this book. As someone who's been in slash/yaoi fandoms for half my life, I can definitel pick out all the points where a more gay-friendly author may have added some mention of gay sex in there.
