I just recently got into the Anita Blake books and i decided to look up reviews on it before i decided to buy the books. I can't believe how horrible people think these books are! I still want to buy them but i'm not sure if i should buy the whole series now. Should i buy just the first 4 and skip the rest or what?

They're pretty readable up to and including Obsidian Butterfly (book #9) - but after that, give them a miss. Bloody Bones (#5) is my favourite of the bunch, and the one I hold up as the last good one in the series. The villains are the best the series has, IMO. After that, they get soft and stupid.

LKH, at one point, declared that "if you don't like the books, don't buy them." I took it literally...and I started downloading them. :) If you want, I can send some of them to you...do you have MSN?

Check them out at the library. If you love a book, then go ahead and buy it.

What everyone else said. I'd say the first...nine books are good (ranging from rock-my-world to decent-ish), then the series goes down faster than Anita a nickel whore.

This is definitely a try-before-you-buy series. I was lucky enough to have a friend (see demoncougar above! *hugs*) buy the first eight for me, in four-book increments, for various birthdays and such, but you'd best stick to borrowing from libraries and fannish friends...at $6.00+ each, getting the whole series (or even parts of it) in one go can get expensive, and possibly land you with a lot of books you dislike and find hard to give away (the AB series is getting a bad reputation, thanks to the last three books).

If you want to own, try to aim for used copies...there's a TON out there, both online and off, and they're usually pretty cheap. Plus you get the satisfaction of knowing you're not directly giving the author money. :)
