We also went out and saw a movie that early evening: STARDUST. We both liked it a great deal. Some of the adds are making it seem more epic movie, and there is a slice of LORD OF THE RINGS in there, but there is a bigger slice, if I had ot pick a movie it felt like of THE PRINCESS BRIDE. But, of course, it's based on a Niel [sic] Gaiman book so it is most certainly it's own unique creation. Niel's having a heck of a year with this movie and BEOWULF, which he co-wrote the screen play to, and either later this year or early next is CORALINE based on the book of the same name. He was a very busy boy at comcicon in San Diego with all the promotional stuff. We finally got to sit down and talk for a few minutes over food at comicon. Seems like we've spent years being at the same conventions, or events, and always saying, wouldn't it be nice if we could talk, or have dinner, but we always seem to be scheduled opposite each other. It was nice to finally carve some time out.

Oh yes.  Can't you imagine Neil crying softly into his leather jacket, because he had not spent time with LKH?  The fact that he writes about her in his blog exactly zero times clearly indicates that he is awed by her enormous ego talent.  /sarcasm.

What does [sic] mean? My internet lingo seems to be a bit rusty ^.^,

And 1) it is Neil and not Niel you stupid cow and 2) please please please stay away from Neil, in case your stupidity is catching. I would not want someone like him catching your apparent sickness of the mind *goes and works on her brain exploding stare*

It's a writing term, used to indicate that the preceding word/sentence in a quote is written verbatim, and not a typo on the part of the person quoting. In this instance, it basically means 'I shit you not, LKH still can't grasp the concept of spelling and grammar'.

From: [identity profile] ladyvy.livejournal.com
[sic] means that the person reusing the quote for their own purposes is indicating that the quote is exactly as printed when it was originally used. Basically, they're not changing whatever the original author said even if it wouldn't be grammatically correct.

Oh no she di'n't

She writes like a teenage fangirl on MySpace! Please tell me she isn't another one of those dreadful people who believe that grammar and spelling don't matter on the internet. LKH is a professional writer, and her blog is a reflection on her professional persona. Bad form, old girl. Bad form.

Grammar and spelling don't matter in her published materials, so why would it matter on the interwebs?

I also wanted to express icon love.

Oh yes, Neil and I are VERY good friends, who have known each other for years and of COURSE he values my work very highly, we just, you know...never talk...or see each other...but we're VERY GOOD friends. Me and Neil. Neil Gaiman. Because we're both so good at writing. Have dinner with him allll the time.

Because, you know, my dad is BEST FRIENDS with Jennifer Aniston. Cause they were like, at the same HOTEL, and they like, were in the same elevator and she asked if he knew who she was, and he didn't recognize her, and she got all offended and he's never even seen a pic of her since, but she's a very close friend of his!

Bleah. (The above is a true story, rendered in "namedrop" style)

Kind of late, but . . .

LKH is probably the only author whose blog I read that wouldn't be freaking the hell out at meeting Neil Gaiman. Other authors have major fangirl meltdowns from meeting authors who are influential in their genre, but not with the standing of Gaiman. They're happy and shocked and beside themselves that they got the chance to talk to someone they admire. And it's great to read because I like that some of my favorite authors are real people. Now I'm thinking that I also like seeing that some of my favorite authors don't have LKH's ego.

I'd love to know what they said in those few minutes. And how much in fear of LKH jumping him Gaiman was. He's got some pretty enthusiastic fangirls, I know, but probably hasn't read evidence that those other ones are likely to fuck him just to show they kind of like him and to further their supernatural need for cock.

I guess not openly freaking out is her way of showing that oh, they're such FRIENDS and such EQUALS that she can be casual about being around him. Not like all those FANS. No, she's another ARTISTE who creates genres and pushes comfort zones and has COMICS just like him, which means she's just as AWESOME and DARK and CREATIVE.

She really needs to know that the greatest authors still show respect and awe and gushiness for people they like and look up to -- think of Diana Wynne-Jones' constant homagery (if that's a word) to Tolkien and Lewis. Pretending you're "too cool to be impressed" is not going to get you ANYWHERE.
Then again, this is the woman who dismissed ALL of the mighty ComicCon that wasn't involved with her, her wretched comics, or people she wanted to namedrop (translation: "Niel"). That sort of says it all.

On a small sidenote, I wonder if Gaiman ever gets gushy and excited when meeting another author, and if so, who.

I just had a horrible thought -- she's leeched off of the ideas of other authors/creators before (Whedon, Rice, Pratchett), so what if her next target is not King, but Gaiman? I shudder to imagine it.

Aside from the horrendous spelling error (duplicated twice), glaring typos, grammatical errors, and indecision over the name the convention they attended, was anyone else bothered by LKH calling Neil a 'boy'?

He's a few years older than she. I checked.

Actually, I'll now be living in fear that LKH will become so struck with Neil that she writes him into one of her books. A la Gary or Jon. :the horror:

Yes, she really displays a lack of humility that stuns me everytime I read her blog. Still, this time, I am not so sure. I mean, who's to say that LKH and Neil Gaiman don't really know each other (or even *shudders* are buddies)? I don't have a clue if they do or don't... because if they do, I don't think she is being that arrogant in the way she speaks of him. Does anyone here know for sure?

Of course if she doesn't know him well, than she is an arrogant sort indeed. Heck, I never read Neil Gaiman, but at least his books are actually published in my language and country. And he has a worldwide fame that LKH can never hope to achieve. And he's been number one on that NYT bestseller list how many times now? Certainly more than once or twice...

Neil Gaiman keeps a very thorough blog of his writing life -- he wouldn't write about a friend he met through his daughter's school, or anything like that, but any time he meets up with an old friend at a convention or someone he likes has a new book coming out, there's some mention of it. Even when he's meeting authors for the first time or getting to know someone he was only slightly acquainted with, he mentions them.

He hasn't mentioned LKH at all in the ... er ... 7ish years I've been reading his blog (that I remember). Definitely didn't mention meeting up with her at Comicon. So either it didn't happen, or she's not important enough for him to remember/mention.

Er... everything else I was about to say is way, way catty (although I guess this IS a "lashout" comm...). ^____^ Suffice to summarize: I wouldn't be surprised if she never read it. Or didn't understand what she read.

and there is a slice of LORD OF THE RINGS in there

My favorite part of Stardust was when Tristran took the One Star up to the clouds of Mount Sky and Primus bit his finger off, thereby losing himself and the One Star into the fires of Captain Shakespeare's closet.

if I had ot pick a movie it felt like of THE PRINCESS BRIDE

I vomited a little in my mouth. D:

I wonder which site she got the info from?

I also can't help but feel some pity for the woman, though. I mean, she's losing her crown in her books' genre because there are so many more fantastic writers there now that she can't possibly compete, many of them getting the movie/tv deals and whatnot that she very probably feels are rightfully hers. I think the namedropping thing is less ego, and more her trying to garner credibility points by attempting to sit at the lunch table with the Really Cool Kids.

Typical High School behavior. :D
