Some really small wank involving the "boy with breasts" comment Anita made a few books ago.

Ok a bit of an info dump :

EGL is a comm for lolita fashion which has as of late picked up some attention in western anime circles. Long story short a company deciding to cash in on the growing popularity makes a booboo by sending in an uninformed, apparently grammatically challenged intern to do the dirty work for them and needless to say it Does Not Go Well.

Cue the entrance of another worker for the same company to show up and reason OP's thought process to all of us. In classic egl format (I'll admit we are a catty bunch) I rush over to her profile and pull out this little gem :

"I hate women who complain about being fat when they're like a size five. Anything under size five isn't a woman. It's a boy with breasts." -Anita Blake

And as someone else states it should be enough to make one ban the company if they hire people who put this sort of quote on their profile where anyone can see it while representing them.

Now as to how this is relevant : all of the people who have written a reply back to the comment in question are not AB fans - in fact they've never heard of LKH. Seeing people so violently reacting to it who don't come with all the knowledge that fans usually do just goes to prove that out in the Real World people are not having it when it comes to LKH's brand of crazy.

Small yes, but it amused me anyway.

I'm not sure who Miss Blake is but I think you would do well not to quote her in the future as anyone that cracked off their rocker that says such completely disconnected sweeping generalizations is not exactly quote worthy. --[livejournal.com profile] florencelasalle

Heh.

Ok, I had trouble getting past the part about the 'lolita community'.

There's a freaking lolita community?

Here I was thinking that was just some kinky PRON thing. >.<

Color me oblivious.

Isn't it just people who want to dress up like Victorian baby dolls? Not too pr0nny. Well, not inherently. :-D

It's a fashion community, not a sexual/ageplay community. "Elegant gothic lolita" is just another form of gothic fashion subculture.

Well, there ya go. :) I'll totally admit to being fashion oblivious, and my 'goth' phase petered out a few years ago! :D

hehe - when I saw the pic all I could think was 'aim, fire, shoot!'. Dressing like that isn't my thing and anything that uses a euphemism for child pornography just squicks me to no end.

It was a joke about shooting - lighten up. You need a thicker skin if you're going to dress like that and can't take an 'aim' joke.

I also don't care if they know about the book or not, or a group that calls itself Lolita is anti-child porn. Lolita is what pedophiles call porn with preteens. Claiming ignorance about the meaning of the word when you sell fashion to children/teens doesn't make it less offensive.

I'd try to rename it.

And I would never hurt a fly. I would just snark it to death ;P

Perhaps "schoolgirl chic"?
Or "schoolgirl Victorian"?

"Chances are if you bring it up in Japan most will still have no idea what you're talking about."

Um...actually, that couldn't be further from the truth. A series called "Lolita Anime" was begun in Japan in 1984 (yes, it is child porn) and there's been others sense then, like the infamous Cream Lemon series. In fact you may have heard phrases like "Lolicon no hentai", which, naturally, stems from "Lolita".

In case you're wonder, I have an encyclopedia of anime dating from as far back as 1917. Haven't watched the stuff in years, but I still read the book from time to time...some of it is really fascinating. Sometimes in a really bizarre way, but still.

Which is all well and good, but that's far from having "no idea" what it is. And they DO use it in the sense it's used in the book, so I imagine that at least some of them are going to have an idea where that particular definition comes from.

I don't know how relevant it is that the potential victims of pedophiles know what the word means as much as the men who stick it in to google to find their porn and are directed at these young boys and girls dressing up for the camera. The adults making the money off of this do know and don't care. That bothers me - the fact the children don't know the words doesn't matter.

I don't give a shit about confusing the word with it's litarary meaning and your fashion. It's what pedophiles call child porn. Why don't you spend your time looking up this word you're throwing around before defending it. Go to some free porn sites, look at their rules for their submissions and you'll see the phrase 'no lolita, no rape, no bestiality' all over the place. They all know what it means - you're the one who doesn't.

You're confusing the word with the book and fashion and not seeing the real world way it is used by pedophiles as a code word for child pornography. These guys don't care about the book or the fashion. I don't care that the word came from a book and is now used for teen fashion.

It bothers me that people who know better (or should) still defend their choice of words when told that this is what pedophiles call their smut. I'm not the one going around posting pic's of kids and labelling it lolita. I'm just telling you that you are pointing every disgusting pedophile to all the sites that use the word lolita. But keep defending your use of it and keep telling yourself that it's ok. The pedophiles don't mind either.

Au contraire - the emphasis on Gothic Lolita is about being beautiful, or elegant, or cute. (or any combination, thereof.) They tend to steer *away* from anything sexual.

Unless I am mistaken, the definition of "Lolita" in Nabokov's book is... about a sexually precocious young girl?

Considering the book was written from the point of view of her molester, that's extremely questionable. ...and actually, at the end he even admits he stole her childhood.

So even though people like to act like "Lolita" and "nymphet" mean some oversexed schoolgirl, anyone who has read the book knows the character was only a victim of a sexual predator.

I am Goth, and that "fashion description" still irritates the crap out of me. A bit like the whole "Catherine and Heathcliff=ideal romance" psuedo-literary bit, only much more offensive.
