So, has anyone read this Lucinda, Darkly: The Demon Princess Chronicles (Paperback)? One review wrote that it follows in the vein of LKH and another said the erotic scenes would make even her blush (which considering how bad her sex scenes are isn't saying much) noentheless I was wonder what you fellow snarkers have to say.

Just from the part of the excerpt I skimmed, I'm not impressed. She seems to have graduated from the LKH Skool Ov Grammar.

May I smack her with a comma? Please?

First sentence of excerpt: "Night fell softly with purple fingers of dusk--"

My Brain: " . . . yeah, that's quite enough of that."

Purple fingers... My first thought is of frostbite, but I don't think that's what she's trying to convey.

It most likely was Leigh. I own a couple of her books. Anal is a main attraction in her books. Shit, I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

I read a few pages of that story somewhere--and the summary on the webpage--and it seemed to me like someone had ripped off Anne Bishop pretty heavily. That turned me off to the point where I couldn't even consider giving it a chance.

Out of curiosity, where did you see a reaction by Anne Bishop?

Which list is it? I abandoned the old list in the wake of spam but never followed her anywhere else, so I'm certainly behind on the gossip! Plus I keep missing the updates about excerpts on the site, etc.

Aha, I think I was on that group but I may have been set to nomail. I turned most of my yahoo groups off while I was trying to graduate from college...never did get around to turning them back on. ;)

I read the excerpt from TANGLED WEBS a couple days ago on the website! I was excited, too...Surreal has been my favorite for a long, long time. I can't believe I've been reading these books for 10 years now!

Oh my god, the excerpt looks almost exactly like a goth Voldemort's Daughter Sue written by someone who wanks off to purple prose. I'm down with the flu, so I'm a bit more blunt than usual, but that thing NEEDS to be sporked. My gad.

Hell, I remember in the anthology she actually had "anal" which surprised me as I don't ever remember LKH mentioning that.
When I was reading that story, I was getting bored and about to pitch the story because it was too LKH-esque to suit my fancies, I read the whole "Put it in my bum!" or something to that effect and decided to actually read a couple of paragraphs I'd skimmed through. All I was remember was thinking, "Holy Shit! That bitch took it up the ass like a champ." Sorry... I'm so used to MSTing hentai with a group of friends and popcorn. And LKH says the haters are prudes, hah!

Heh... I think Asher should fuck her up the ass... That would make up for him not being able to fuck JC. Plus, with Anita face down he can imagine it being his real lover. I got so fed up with her lack of anal sex, I wrote a fanfic where I MADE Whorenita take it up the ass. It was well received by those who read it. :]

After searching through a LJ community I was a part of, I've finally found it. (I wrote it 2 years ago.) The fic is supposed to be in the same style as LKH, and sound like something she would write albeit with hopefully [crosses fingers] better grammar and with more intelligence. Other than that, I warn you to beware of the purple prose, I was a naive virgin at the time. Well enough excuses, here's the link: Anita in a REAL menage-a-trois (http://community.livejournal.com/thepard/79103.html)

Demon dead, High Court, serving Queens? If I were Anne Bishop I'd be pissed too.

The first excerpt reads like a mesh of different authors, and the purple prose would get annoying really fast.

Nope and not going to read. The title scares me too. Demon Princess Chronicles? It sounds like anime fanfiction. Anyway, is it supposed to be fantasy or is romance disguised? I've gotta stop using the hard way to find out the difference. XD

I haven't read that one but I read the other ones. They were ok, but not good enough for me to want to get this one. Very much like LKH but less angsty.

This is a review posted on Romantic Times Book Reviews.

Sunny is a talented writer who shows a good deal of promise, but this tale of powerful women and the men who serve them bears an eerie resemblance to Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels fantasy series, though the plot and setting are different. Not only are the relationships between the queens and their warrior lords oddly similar, there’s also a blood-drinking Prince of Hell who rules over a race of beings known as the demon dead. Also, there are many references to rape being used as a tool to punish a queen, which is similar to how rape is used in Bishop’s series. Some readers may find these references to rape — as well as one semi-graphic rape scene — problematic.

—Natalie A. Luhrs

I adore The Black Jewels Trilogy, and respect Anne Bishop a lot for coming up with the world. I'd ex this author based solely for the "borrowing".

I've ready all of the Mona Lisa books and Lucinda, Darkly. At first I couldn't stop laughing because they're Moon People and they are really over the top. But I eventually found the first book for $4 and picked it up.

I think the books are fun in the same way I think soap operas are. And the sex is at least different. But unlike with Anita, I didn't like any of the characters very much. Very meh. The writing isn't bad (except for the melodrama but that's part of the appeal). I've never read Bishop so the world building interested me and was enough to make me look past some of the over-the-top emotional crap. Definitely worth getting from the library, but I wouldn't buy them.

But I am getting a little tired of petite chicks who manage to save the day no matter how beat they are and all the men that worship them for it. Just a little.

I've been reading the Mona Lisa books for pure lol, and...well, that's all they're really good for. I cracked up during the first sex scene where the hero had CHESTNUT (possibly flavoured) NIPPLES. The Urple is as rampant as erections sorry, rods.

I laugh, but it's the laughter of a woman in pain. My uterus still curls up and cries at what heroines like Lisa and Anita go through for the sake of the Sex of Life with their Magical Healing Vags. I have no idea what these authors are smoking to think that all this is sexay.

Aw. I kind of like the idea of chestnut (colored, I hope!) nipples. ^___^ Pretty color. (Flavor, not so much -- like an unpleasantly textured potato.)

Still not readin' it, though. I am fine, thanks, without the deep purple fingers across the skies of dawn or whatever. I'm only putting up with that in Greek myth form.

Direct quote: His chest was smooth perfection, needing no other adornment but the twin areolas that were the color of warm chestnuts and would no doubt be as tasty.

Chestnut. Flavoured. Nipples.

[livejournal.com profile] naomijclark started a flogging of this book and that's what prompted me to download a pirate copy read it, because I just have to see how bad it is with my own two eyes.

For reasons I cannot quite understand, the bit that bugs me the most is "needing no other adornment but the twin areolas..."

Why do I hate this? *ponders* Why is this so unsexy, to me? I think I want euphemisms... but that's just an open invitation to the silly. Bah.

"So, has anyone read this Lucinda, Darkly: The Demon Princess"
^ I saw that line, and thought this would be a sporking of some bad Anita Black fanfiction. (Like maybe another one where she's turned into a vampire, but wakes up earlier then three days and is magically a master vampire. Cause she's MAGIC!)

But a horrible purple book, with ideas/themes stolen? Almost as good. I have not had the ...pleasure of reading them, and from what everyone is saying about them, if I do, it'll be for mocking purposes, and they'll be checked out from the library. Bah, writers, get orginal.

I read the short story and was like "ANAL! A Threesome! She went through with it! LKH will be mad she didn't do it first!"

Without a doubt, Sunny has stolen liberally from LKH and others. It was truly a mishmash of different story arcs from other series.

I will not be reading this series. I have had enough of LKH. I don't need to read her plagiarizer.

I tried to read the excerpt on her website, but I could get past the first few paragraphs. How can anyone be expected to like or want to read about a character who wanders around, thinking about how she's the hottest hot that ever hotted? Blargh.

Look, lady, we know that your character is perfection personified. But Jesus CHRIST, is it so important to establish that right off the bat that you have to have the character herself observe it? Seriously, who the hell walks around all the time, thinking about how sincerely fuckable she is?

Also, I am sick to DEATH of plots about magical sex. It seems to serve only as a way to excuse the fact that the heroine is having loads of (supposedly hot) sex with every peen in sight. Why is that something that needs excusing? Why take the healing/powering-up and use it to make sex a job? The sex should be fun, not something the characters HAVE to do.

Grrr. I ranted. I guess that's what this comm is for, though.
