Nov. 15th, 2008 05:34 pmI love a good allusion as much as the next person but an LKH one in realtively good, if mildly boring one just got me by surprise (especially in reference to Anita's fashion sense):
"black, knee high Fluevogs (flats in case I had to run), Kenneth Cole skirt I had rocked on many an occassion, gray blouse and long leather pope jacket that I pretended made me look like Anita Blake"
-"Night Child" by Jes Battis (P.98)
Though I appreciate the use of flat boots as opposed to heels

Date: 2008-11-16 06:51 am (UTC)Why, why, why did I read that?!? Seriously, I'm not sure whether to laugh or just sit here gaping at the ego-trip. Though I do have to wonder, which is worse? The slight exaggerations of Underworld, or the magical sex-powers-out-my-ass that Blake and Merry seem to share?

Date: 2008-11-17 07:54 pm (UTC)"I am so tired of watching monster flicks where just because it's vampires and werewolves, or whatever, that no one seems to care about biology, real mythology, real folklore, real history, real fighting tactics, real weaponry used in a realistic manner"
I'm wondering, where in her books, do these things apply? I haven't read no real biology, mythology, folklore, history or fighting tactics in her books... ever. But then again, I wasn't looking for it... because they're FANTASY books.
Same with Underworld. After reading her post I want to smack her on the back of the head and say "Duh, Laurell, it's NOT real... they could make the werewolves grow wings if they wanted. It's FANTASY! FANTASY! And Entertainment. It doesn't have to be accurate!"
And of course their ammo clips never end unless they're in critical situations! That would ruin the flow of the whole action scene. Who cares if real weapons only take 12 bullets anyway??? We all know it's fiction and I think I'd be bored if the hero/heroine stopped every 10 bullets to reload. *rolls eyes*

Date: 2008-11-17 09:49 pm (UTC)Complaint number three: Yeah, I believe that a master vampire would allow himself to be put into hibernation, and trust that when his turn came the other vamps would wake him up and let him rule. Sure I do. Machiavelli must be rolling in his grave.
Uh, LKH? You're not the only one who writes about vampires. And you seem to have forgotten that vampires ARE NOT HUMAN. They were once (in some cases never were), but now they are not. Who's to say that they wouldn't show each other more loyalty, seeing every member of the race as their own kind of extended family? Just because it doesn't fit with your image, doesn't mean that it could never happen.
She's been saying similar things a lot recently, more about her faeries than her vampires though, and it almost merits its own post. Almost...

Date: 2008-11-18 12:40 am (UTC)Becuz teh vampiyez are all about teh hawt sexxors and teh political posturez, and LKH created teh urban fantasiez genre that "Underworld" is part of! They OWE her to follow her vision, if they're going to" have werewolves and vampires and LEATHER.
Seriously, one would expect vampires to be MORE loyal to their kind because they'd be a minority, and could not expect others to be very welcoming of them.
I'm still waiting for a "Hellboy II" rant about how those faeries are sooooooo inaccurate, that's not how they are at ALL.
