I'm pimping Robin McKinley because of one particular book, Sunshine. Everything I've ever read by her is good, she mostly does YA fantasy with strong female characters. *Actual* strong female characters, not female characters who derive their strength from the weapons they're carrying.

Sunshine immediately reminded me of the ABVH books -- because Sunshine is an example of the genre done right.

I highly recommend it, and btw, this was a great idea. Thanks for the recs, everyone.

ETA: Oh yeah, a synopsis. :)

Sunshine is a vampire novel set in an alternate universe where something called the Voodoo Wars have changed the way people live. There's magic, and it's scary, and vampires, and those are scary too.

She's great. My favorite is The Hero and the Crown. You know? A female character who's strong, even when she's lost her sword.

I know! there's just something about it, isn't there? I think Sunshine is the book we secretly crave when we pick up an LKH. :P

Or maybe it's just that there's a dessert called "Sunshine's Eschatology." Who wouldn't love a dessert with that name?

Oh YES, The Blue Sword, The Sword and the Crown and then Sunshine, what a fabulous book. Alas, she doesn't plan a sequel. And even the tatoos are scary!

On her Web site, she says she hasn't ruled out a sequel, just that she doesn't have one cooking right now. So keep the old fingers crossed, eh?

I love this book as well.

Which is odd... Because books that have a lot of "_______ amount of time later"'s usually bug me a lot...

But I love it.
