Her serendipity blog?
May. 11th, 2009 03:51 pmhttp://blog.laurellkhamilton.org/index.php/site/Serendipity_with_a_side_of_Pain/
Please pardon my horrible blogging skills. I'm a confessed newbie.
So I have two points to make.
1. That blog. She whines like she is the only woman to EVER go through relationship trials and tribulations. And the woman has a serious inferiority complex. You'd think with her relentless online nattering and realizations that she'd get over it, but she never does. I sometimes think she just cries for the sympathy and the audience. And here's the thing...I can see someone going through some heavy stuff, working it out by writing, and then getting over it. Everyone has that due, right?
But I guess the thing that really gets me about reading her blog is that it is the same old stuff over and over. I think that is really what is at the core of people's annoyance with the thing. Would be be annoyed if we weren't sitting here thinking, "Laurell. You really just need to drop that shit and move on with your life."
2. That picture of her and Jon on the blog? Ok. I'm all for women getting the younger men. It's about time that whole thing was reversed. So 9 times out of 10, I'll give the woman a "HIGH FIVE" if she's got a hot younger man.
But there she is, looking like the Mom of Dracula and he looks like some kid who doesn't realize he should have graduated college about two years ago. And what is with him wearing the makeup? When your man is prettier than you are, ladies, we have an issue. Men and makeup needs to stay with the emo kids and the Rock Gods. I completely realize that I am being snarky here, but that picture gives me the willies. What do you think?

Date: 2009-05-11 10:00 pm (UTC)Also, I think people here may get the "willies" from pictures of LKH and boytoy because the woman has blabbed so much about their personal life. If I knew nothing about LKH, and saw her picture I'd probably find her average looking or maybe even pretty despite her atrocious fashion sense. Sadly, her public persona is so obnoxious that I can't look at pictures of her and find her attractive. Jon has never looked good to me so he would probably just look like a normal guy I wouldn't find attractive. Actually, my opinion of Jon is pretty neutral since almost all the info we have from him comes from LKH and that woman is not stable.

Date: 2009-05-12 11:28 pm (UTC)The one thing that makes me think of Jon with a lot of caution is the fact that he was the president or vice president of her fan-club before he started dating her, that sounds a bit questionable

Date: 2009-05-11 10:35 pm (UTC)Um, some women can be perfectly "girly" about their appearance and have short nails. My friend in particular is this way (totally girly girl when we go out, has to have perfect hair and clothes), mostly because she's a nervous biter.
This reminds me, I need to cut my nails before my final piano jury. They're starting to click on the keys.

Date: 2009-05-11 10:42 pm (UTC)His dewy-eyed expression is what bothers me: complacently vacant, Stepford-esque. It brings to mind Nathaniel more than his physical description.
Btw, I don't know if it's makeup giving him that soft, fresh-faced complexion and touch of color. He might have some foundation, guyliner and lipgloss on but I think this photo was touched up. Skin tone and color are too even and painterly. Oh, and on my monitor it looks like Laurell has had some lines removed from her forehead too. I can still see a hint of them over the left eyebrow.
oooooh yeah

Date: 2009-05-11 11:16 pm (UTC)I do not like men wearing makeup or nail polish; I wouldn't date (assuming I wasn't married, which I am) a man who wore makeup, nail polish, or had long hair. Just my personal preference.

Date: 2009-05-11 11:43 pm (UTC)But hey, she finally changed the color scheme on her blog - it's no longer such an eyestrain to read. Wow, never thought I'd see the day that happened. Now, if only she would learn to not write run-on paragraphs... :-p

Date: 2009-05-12 01:08 am (UTC)I'd be happy if there was more good fantasy fiction out there that was balanced between the male and female characters and had really good villains. All I see lately are stories where the female leads are generally bitchy Mary Sues and the monsters are either sex objects or an afterthought.
I haven't see a strong vampire character done right since Lestat. But there we go with the crazy authors again...

Date: 2009-05-12 12:31 am (UTC)That aside, its yet another blog about just how manly LKH is, and how we should just be in slack-jaw awe of her at all times. Because we can't, you know, grasp how hard it is to be as amazing and tortured as she is.

Date: 2009-05-12 01:01 am (UTC)In my opinion, Jon was prettified for that picture-whether it be by the wonders of modern technology or the wonders foundation, powder, lip stain, and eyeliner. I don't know. The whole thing seems to me like they're both trying too hard.
I think my whole thing with authors and famous people blogging is that it ruins the mystery. Same thing with these over-exposed stars and starlets. How fascinating would Brad Pitt be if he had a blog telling us what he had for breakfast, what made him flatulent, how his exes had scarred him, how much mommy didn't love him, how we should all believe and live our lives this certain way and then preached to us how enlightened he was? His career would go the way of Tom Cruise after he danced on Oprah's couch. So he leaves a little to the imagination and his fans (of which I am not one in particular) want more.
The ones that hold my attention the longest are the ones that I don't know everything about. Save all the psycho-analytical dissection and microscopic dissection for the post-mortem autobiography that the kids will cash in on.
Do you think it's ever occurred to some of these public figures that are embracing technology that they're shooting themselves in the foot in the longrun? Do you think they're shooting themselves in the foot in the longrun?

Date: 2009-05-12 01:30 am (UTC)Now THIS is an interesting topic. Much of my job involves social media, so I'm interested in its effects. Take Twitter. When I started, I followed many celebs I thought would be interesting. Stephen Fry, Neil Gaiman, Graham Linehan (creator of Father Ted), Robert Llewellen (Kryten on Red Dwarf), and the guys from Rifftrax/MST3K are still my favorite Tweeters, because I can identify with them. Still, I had to unfollow Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and others because I just don't care. I get it. Their lives are more fabulous than mine.
For me, I definitely think Hamilton's blogs have hurt her. It's the smugness of her fabulous life, the condemnation of her haters (her grandmother and ex-husband included) and the "more awesome than thou" tone she takes that irks me. How can anyone identify with that? Still, I can't look away. Her books were just bad before, but her arrogance and belief in her own hype makes me want to shout, "Will you just look at yourself for a moment?? Really!" For me, it's like deliberately listening to Rush Limbaugh just for the healthy dose of rage.
However, there are troos out there who lap up everything she has to say and may even go as far as tailor their own lives around her blogs. To them, her words are gospel. In their case, she's done her job well.

Don't mind me...

Date: 2009-05-12 07:42 pm (UTC)Ya know... I can understand being messed up over hardships faced during your childhood... but C'MON! My mother didn't have regular shrink visits when I was growing up, but she managed to accept things about her past and move forward for the good of her husband and kids, simply because she reeeeaally wanted to. (And that poor woman suffered just about every type of abuse in the book.) LKH doesn't WANT to get over it. It makes her feel entitled to her behavior. If she gets "better" she loses leverage. I've met tons of people like her in the bug-house myself. There are people who WANT to get better and there are people who just want to be enabled. *YAWN* I offically don't care how lousy she feels about her looks.
That chick needs to grow up already. She's going to be that much more ridiculous blathering on about her looks/fashion skills at age sixty.

Date: 2009-05-12 11:39 pm (UTC)I wouldn't want so many people to know about my family problems,
she always gives me the feeling of someone with a very big attention seeking problem.
And the pic of Jon just looks like one of this touched up posed portrait pictures where the artist touches up on your make-up and the pic digitally.
Not to be confused with every day look
which you can see if you reloud the page a few times.
