In light of this recent post to
anita_blake_fan, I have a suggestion.
I think that we should draft a response to the perpetual "why are y'all always complaining"/"if you hate them so much why do you still read the books"/"how can you call yourself a fan if you hate the books" question.
And the next time someone makes a post like that, we should all respond with the form-letter response. Individually. :P

Date: 2006-04-12 02:24 am (UTC)We still read them because: the books are utter trainwreaks. You know you shouldn't look, but you can't help yourself because you want to see the carnage.
We are always complaining because: the books that did not have sex where actually good. There was plot development, plot was not relegated secondary to Anita's lovelife, and Anita was not yet the uber-powerful Mary Sue that she is now.
We can call ourselves fans because: it is the place of the fan to not only enjoy/celebrate/worship good new books in a series, but too look at the flaws as well. As much as people enjoy the Harry Potter series doesn't mean that those fans don't have issues with those books. To say you can only say positive things about books is to say that you can only be a fan if you are a yes-man. Besides, as bad as the new books are, there are still things to like, and that keeps us as fans, even if the strength of our love is severely diminished.

We still read them because it was such a good idea and it would still be a good idea if she went back to the plot.

Date: 2006-04-12 09:51 am (UTC)We could have something like:
Dear Rabid LKH Fan:
I am:
[x] A fellow fan of LKH
[ ] A former fan of LKH
[ ] Neither, but I'm'a gonna reply anyhoo
I complain about LKH's work because:
[x] It used to be SO DAMN GOOD
[x] Her spelling is terrible
[x] The sex scenes are worse than the spelling
[ ] I am an embittered unpublished writer who can't believe LKH gets printed
[ ] I am bored
[x] Your anger amuses me
I still read LKH’s books because:
[x] I live in hope that she will kill Richard
[ ] I want to find out what happens to the characters
[ ] I seek out a glimmer of hope that she hasn’t really sold her soul
[x] I laugh at the sex scenes and read them aloud at slumber parties
[ ] I do not, in fact, read her books
I call myself “a fan” while complaining because:
[x] Being a fan and being a mindless sycophant are DIFFERENT THINGS
[ ] I DO like the books ... except for the bits I don’t
[ ] A freak flood carried away everything else on my bookshelves
[ ] I live in hope that things will get better
But I think it needs fleshing out a bit.
