I found a bunch of the Anita books in my friend's shed and she said I could take a few. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me which book or books had the creepy Pedo-Anita/wimpy Nathaniel dynamic. I wanna read them for the squicky lulz. Thanks in advance!

Narcissus in Chains is the one that starts off the trend of Anita trying to "resist" her attraction to Nathaniel. I think she sleeps with him either at the end of that novel or in the very next one, Cerulean Sins.

Yes, read Narcissus in Chains. If you can wade through it you're brave.

I actually did a Chapter-by-Chapter review of it on Youtube. xD

Because someone needed to. For the lulz.

Here's the collection: http://www.youtube.com/user/minaminokyoko#grid/user/77CDFFA2C4B1B84F

Mind you, it's totally informal and I haven't finished the whole novel, but I actually plan to do the entire thing once I have more free time. I just felt like someone needed to rip the book to shreds so why not me?

Incubus Dreams has Anita having sex with Nathaniel in her office for the infamous "rainmaker" sequence. I think this is also the book where she has sex with him in half-leopard form and Richard walks in on them at the end. It always stuck with me that LKH waxed poetical about Nathaniel's ass as though sculpted by a divine hand with its perfect dimples.

OH AND THEN THE BAD KITTY FLOGGING SCENE omg lulz.

But yeah, definitely start with Narcissus in Chains.

The part when Richard walked in is when I physically threw my book across the room and yelled in pure frustration. See, I bought the book the year it came out as a present to myself for Christmas and was reading it the day after Christmas when I realized how fucking awful it was. My uncle heard me throw the book and asked me what was wrong. It was kind of hilarious, in retrospect. xD

It took me three attempts to get through ID - I took it to work with me to read in my lunch break and couldn't make it past chapter two. I wound up reading the first three Nightside novels and Watchmen before I got some time off and forced myself to finish ID. By then, I could switch over to lulzy cracked out badfic guilty pleasure mode and that's when the books become so much more entertaining. Otherwise, I'd be a seething pit of endless capslocked rage.

My hardcover of ID is currently being used to prop up a stack of dvds in my room. It seems to be the best use for a book the size and weight of a brick.

i just finished episode 0 part 2. it almost killed me! [no, really, i was drinking water when the Micah jokes happened. damned near choked to death]

i'm not stopping, i'll be watching them all [probably tonite] but i wanted to tell you, before i forgot, that i completely agree with wrt Obsidian Butterfly - it's EASILY best book of the series.

since NiC, i've SKIMMED the books. i ignore the sex scenes. [i was shocked with the latest book - i kept giving my boyfriend updates - "it's been 2 chapters and STILL no sex! 3 chapters, no sex! wow, did LKH hire someone to writer for her? 4 chapters, no sex!" and so on and so forth. so i'm actually slightly hopeful that the books are returning to something that's readable. because it's not that there's sex scenes, it's that they're BAD sex scenes... anyway] and i look back at OB and i ask "what the holy hell?!" OB was just so wonderful, and to be followed by NiC was just WRONG.

you're hilarious, btw. completely and totally hilarious. i hope you make more :)

IT'S STUCK IN MY BRAIN AND IT WON'T COME OUT. It's not for a lack of trying to replace it with better reading material or turning to alcohol.

Even with Obsidian Butterfly, there were still problems such as Anita being "forced" to view Bernardo's huge wang, the complete infatuation of Olaf with Anita, and we won't even mention the ridiculous way that the shapeshifters have to "give offering" to the vampires of OB's court. Even with that, because Anita deals mostly with people, just regular people, I would say it's the best of the series. It's definitely my favorite, and the only one I've kept (other than *hangs head in shame* a hard cover copy of Narcissus in Chains, but my husband got that for me because I was so excited, and I just can't get rid of a gift).

I was delighted to find out that most of the fans consider Obsidian Butterfly to be the best novel. Tvtropes.org really sealed the deal (seen here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AnitaBlake). That's why nearly all former Anita Blake fans tell the newbies to just read until Obsidian Butterfly and stop.

I browsed the new books and I was still horrified and angry with how unapologetically shitty they are. Mind you, LKH finally seemed to hear the massive outcry for less sex, but then "Bullet" came out and it is by far the worst novel in the series. And I'm including Narcissus in Chains in that statement. The reason being that both Anita and Richard become completely bisexual and monogamous and they absolutely will not shut up during ANY of the sex scenes. That's yet another thing I hate about the series. No one can just get in the mood and do it--no, they have to have six page discussions about what they want to do to each other and why they should or shouldn't do it or whatever other bullshit LKH comes up with. Ugh.

My God, I've written you an essay. Forgive me. In conclusion, thank you for watching my videos and agreeing with me! :D

I love Bullet, because it's the pinnacle of everything that is wrong with the series, up until um, the next book Flirt, where she sucks out Nicky's soul. I would say to a new reader read Incubus in Chains to see what initially pissed readers off, then Bullet and Flirt to read what pisses them off now. Read the others after IiC at their own risk.

this is all true - OB was the first Anita book i'd read, actually. so i took most of it with a salt shaker, because it made sense to me [not knowing most of the back story] that all these different preternatural humans would play these games, would flaunt their differences and use them in power games, as a way of getting back at people who had the luxery of being normal. it wasn't until i'd read the whole series that i saw how it was shifting, moving from "i'm flaunting my difference" to "i'm forcing you to not only deal with my difference, but also become different like me".
this most likely stems from the fact that i've been playing RPGs since i was 6 [and it was still just "Dungeons and Dragons" - no editions] and the fact that i started playing White Wolf games as soon as they came out [and in Vampire: The Masquerade, especially, power games like this are meat and drink. not specifically sex, so much, but mind games, power struggles, politics that involve sharing blood, etc etc]

the funny part is that i didn't LIKE Anita. Anita in OB [and most of the earlier books] is the type of person i feel a bit sorry for, she's conflicted and her mother's death and etc, but i'd want to just *slap*. i get trama, i get having PTSD [since i have both] but you have to grow up. not "get over", i'm not actually sure that's something to even attempt to attain. but grow up, and stop making everything, all the time, about your issues. and gods know that *I* struggle to do that, and i fail pretty often. and i'm sure there are people who want to slap me.
but i didn't have to LIKE Anita to recognize myself in her [with different problems, less violence, and no sex issues.] she was/is selfish and self-centered, and it was actually sort of nice to see a character who was ALLOWED - by the author and by the readers, both - to BE flawed in that way.

that's why NiC and all the books after bother me so much. Anita went from a flawed person to a paragon *because* somehow, the author decided she didn't HAVE flaws - that Anita was selfish and selfcentered because she deserved to be. that Anita was so awesome she could do no wrong.

that's what creeps me out. the sex scenes are boring, but i can skip them.

[i totally feel you on the gifts thing. my boyfriend got me signed copies of several LKH books, so i have to keep them. especially as they're personalized. to this name, the one i use online everywhere so i can't even find someone else with the name to give/sell to, if i were able to get rid of gifts - there isn't anyone named "Denelian". there is apparantly a band in Washington that started in, IIRC, 2002 that is named "Denelian", but that's the BAND'S name, not a person's name. also, they stole my name *G*]

ok, done waxing philisophical. i'm on part 6, i think - back to watching/listening and laughing! [i'm now disabled and in chronic horrible pain - so i REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY *EXTRA* appreciate these - it's good to laugh, good to find talent. do you have a paypal for donations? i don't have a LOT of spare money, but i do have a budget for giving to artists i wish to support :) my boyfriend thinks i'm sort of mad - i have the "women's rights" budget, which is mostly donations to Planned Parenthood, and i have the "support artists" budget, which is people like you, and i have my "must feed the word addiction" budget, which is bigger than my FOOD budget some months. hey, i'd rather eat ramen for a week than NOT read the newest book by one of my favorite writers!
if you do [or in the future will] write original stuff, point it out to me - i'd buy it!

hey, look at what i wrote to the commenter who replied to my comment telling you how my i ♥ your series :D that was a BOOK i wrote zir.

they *DO* all suck, all the new books. and, sadly [for me, at least] they suck SO BAD that i can't STOP. you know how some movies are just SO cheesy and SO over the top and SO badly directed with effects that are SO just stupid that the movie becomes something ... irrestible? like, better than MST3K BAD?! that's what the Anita books are to me, now. and i do, i MST3K to my boyfriend every time a new one comes out :D

but i have to skip the sex scenes to do it. they are so very bad, and NOT the bad that can become awesome. i don't remember which, but one of those books actually made me want to NOT ever have sex again. thank gods it was a temporary insanity. unlike the Anita books, which have become permanently insane...

also: DAMN YOU TV TROPES!!!

you do realize that there are interuniversal treaties about the application of TV Tropes, right? that TV Tropes have been banned in over 20 galaxies, because TV Tropes is the ULTIMATE Doomsday Weapon [no, really - you send one little link to one private in the opposing military, and watch as the entire military gets sucked into it, ignoring food, alcohol, scantily-clad people of their chosen preference, incoming fire, and Mandates From Heaven. TV Tropes destroys war!]

Lol, very nice use. Mine is rotting in the bottom of one of my giant plastic containers I have to store all my old writing and my absurdly huge collection of Rurouni Kenshin manga. I've considered burning it, but that would be a waste of a good fire.

^THIS.

Seriously, you go on TVtropes for one page and end up stuck there for three hours giggling and editing like mad. It's a black hole or as Spoony would say, a BLAGGOLE!.

truth, such truth...

no, really, i still have seven tabs open from going to look at the Anita Blake page...

3 hours is the minimum time i've been sucked in for - but i didn't discover TV Tropes until after i became disabled and so didn't have things like a job to get in the way. so that's probably more me than TV Tropes. but STILL :D they're way, way too fun/addictive. [also: my favorite webcomic writer CONSANTLY links TV Tropes. he makes them. he adds them. he builds comics on the idea. it's a bit insane in the GOOD way. and on the plus side, the ENTIRE Vogon destructor fleet was distracted by TV Tropes SO BADLY they destroyed whatever planet became the asteroid belt instead of Earth. so that's awesome.]

you have the order backwards... she, erm, "Brides" Nicky in Flirt. Bullet he's living at the Circus w/ them, and is when the "less bad" Harlequin give Anita and JC gold weretigers...

HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE: in Hit list, there's no sex [or attempted sex] until CHAPTER 13! i'm still shocked.
