It's Tuesday, how about another teaser from, A Shiver of Light, the new Meredith Gentry novel, June 2014:

Doyle's hand tightened on mine, and he said, "Swear it, by the Darkness that eats all things."

Rhys looked very serious then, "Let me swear it on the love I bear Merry, our children, and the men in this room, the men and women that are waiting for news at the home we have all built. Let me swear on the first true happiness I have known in 'lo these long, dark centuries, our little Rose will not die here like this, she will grow strong and crawl fast enough to frustrate her brother."

Okay, usually I'd giggle at the sibling-rivalry stuff, but the phrasing REALLY doesn't fit with the high-fantasy style of speech he's using, and is just completely out of place with the scene in general. A good writer does NOT mix classic-literature-type dialogue with modern phrasing--unless it's for, generally, a laugh, which is probably not what LKH is going for here.

Also, I haven't been paying much attention to who's who, but Rose and her brother are Merry's "should be dead from three times too many chromosomes" twins, correct? That line arguably makes no sense about two babies the same age unless they know one will be delayed/disabled. And GODS FORBID anything like THAT should ever happen, because a disability is always OMG SO TRAGIC no matter how minor, I'm sure... -_-
