I've heard people give the same advice for sex and writing, namely, that you should drink to lower your inhibitions, so you can have wild sex, or wild, new creative ideas. I've never understood that advice. If I was anymore uninhibited sober, I'd be a serial killer. - LKH

A) You're one of the most inhibited people around about any sort of sex not called Dick Goes Here.
B) Uninhibited = serial killer? All right then, lady.
C) There are problems with drunk writing and drunk sex. Serial killing is not one of them.
D) You're already a serial killer of good ideas, punctuation, and characterization, so how would we tell the difference?

I like that she focuses on drinking to lower inhibitions, but never doing recreational drugs.

Do recreational drugs even come up in her works? I've never seen them mentioned before. But I feel like SOMEONE out there would have manufactured--or tried--a drug that gives them some kind of therian-strength besides PCP.

Gonna shut up before I give her ideas. Not that she'd USE them...

Wasn't there some honey liquidy stuff in one of the Merry books you could use like E for recreational sex? I think it's BAD NEWS BEARS because Merry shows these cops that it can be used to rape men and make a woman "want" to be raped??

It was weird, because the desc of *using* the whatever-it-was was sexier than a lot of her actual sex scenes, and then there was this big smackdown of OMG DRUGGGGGGGGGGGs, when TBH the original description made me think of something like Passion Nibblers (which is just a gel that smells nice and makes your clit and nipples hard) or like, one of those arousal gels that's basically evening primrose oil and mint/menthol. I really thought we were going to get a whole interesting story about the drug trade, and whatever, and instead the bad guy is basically giving people massages with magic arousal oil.

Which should tell you how vanilla she actually is -- the OMG violation of an OTC product/basic sex toy product is that it makes a woman *want* to have sex, not that it's a violation OF the woman's ability to GIVE consent by not telling her it's in it.

I had to jump-start my brain after seeing this. I think it went into rage overload.

Okay. First. Who the fuck says you should drink before sex? No, seriously, who? I have never in my life heard anyone say anything of the kind. Completely the opposite, in fact. Either LKH is running with an incredibly toxic crowd, or she is lying. Again. I have also never heard anyone say you should drink before writing, but that's just completely out-there rather than horrible.

Second. You need inhibitions in order to not to want to kill people? Really, LKH? REALLY? I know Anita Blake is a heinous murderer, torturer, rapist, and etc., but I do not think you are actually as much like her as you pretend to be. I think you think being a murderous sociopath would be oh so cool n'edgy. But you can't even eat a piece of pizza without beating yourself up about it. You are completely engrossed in what other people think of you and you are INCREDIBLY judgmental of other women for things like enjoying sex and eating anything other than salads.

I don't know if it's possible to be more inhibited than LKH.

I feel like she's trying to eradicate the idea of recreational drugs. I have heard of people smoking weed before sex (it was recommended for a virgin to help relax and distract from any pain) and other recreational drugs for writing. But DRINKING? Yeah, no.

You do have a point about her not being able to eat a slice of pizza. I am pretty sure serial killers can eat pizza just fine, without remorse. Because, y'know, lack of empathy and shit.

Let's not even touch her inability to kill her own characters. How much more inhibited can she be?

LKH is a similar age to me and probably grew up with the concept of "here let me loosen you up with a drink" being part of a man's seduction technique for women. Certain drinks weren't called "leg opener" for nothing. It was definitely in popular culture at the time and wasn't necessarily presented in the icky, roofie-of-the-50s-through-70s way it now sounds. I know I'll usually have A drink, at least, when I get with someone new, which helps soften any first-time nerves, but then I am a drinker and liquor is my social smoother. Once you've gone there though booze isn't going to magically improve your sexual experience and you shouldn't NEED alcohol to have sex with a partner. If you do there is something amiss.

Of course for men being actually intoxicated is not generally recommended.

As for drinking when writing, pfft. Again, it might loosen your brain up a little but it also loosens up your interest in focusing and writing stuff down, especially if you start concentrating on the drinking and not the writing.

This whole thing is just Laurell trying to make a PSA about how Booze Is Bad. And failing miserably.

Wow, I am so impressed at Laurell's candour about her wild sexual uninhibitedness. She's always been so circumspect about her sex life till now. Here was me thinking she was very boring and vanilla and probably had sex with her husband - she is married, isn't she, I can't quite recall much about him, not even his name - with the lights off and sheets pulled up to her neck. Gosh, I'm so glad she cleared that up.

The drinking thing is just ridiculous. Is it a UK/US thing? I mean, I never drink with the intention of getting wasted. I drink because I like an occasional glass of fancy wine with a nice dinner, but the aim is never "let's get plastered so we can do all those sexy things we daren't do when we're sober!" You don't have to get drunk just because you're having alcohol and I think it's utterly ridiculous that a woman her age can't tell the difference between the two.

IDK? Australia's got a really big drinking culture and getting completely wasted is generally the aim/a mark of pride. There's a lot of peer pressure to be drinking, even if you know your cut off ("just one more, c'mooon,") and we've got a massive drunken violence problem.

But that's a completely different thing from what LKH is saying here, because she seems to be conflating a shot of liquid courage with possibly lubricating your brain for creative purposes. Which isn't to say that wine/drugs are necessary for creativity (though she does conflate that a lot too), more that it can take the edge off stress/nagging doubts enough to get things started. LKH seems to be clinging to the Bohemian idea of the starving, tortured artiste surviving on naught but hard liquor, debauchery, and dreams.
