My sister-in-law is deployed, and our thoughts, prayers, and brightest wishes for a safe return are with her. To all of you that have men and women in the armed forces, wearing the uniform, and defending our freedom, thank you for letting them go so far from home, and potentially in harm's way. Watching my sister, Chica, go through all of this has given me a new respect not just for our soldiers, but for their families. Thank you, to my sister-in-law who has become another sister to me, and all who wear the uniform, for your service, and thank you to their families, including my sister, for your time, patience, and worry.

This... makes me uncomfortable. I don't want to lessen what she's going through by having someone she's close to deployed, but this woman is her friend's wife. By throwing terms like sister-in-law around, I feel like she's framing the experience as something that is more personal than it is. The ownership pain is transferred from her friend to her. At least, that's how I read it.
It would have been read as more sincere if she didn't try to claim familiar bonds.
Am I out of line, here? I certainly believe that family is more than just blood ties, but this stretches it.

It's not just you. The thing is that we don't know - they might be close and her friend's wife just might keep all her stuff locked down, or she might be actively rolling her eyes. The thing is that LKH, like Anita/Merry, always presents things in first-person, and it's ALWAYS how it affects her, and she's proven to have some issues with personal space.

I'm personally waiting to see if she tries to make this Memorial Day all about her and her friend's sacrifice.

As far as I know, Jon's an only child just like LKH. Chica is short for "chickenchick" which was Pili's twitter handle. You may remember her as being LKH's PA's SO. They split and LKH apparently adopted Pili as her sister of choice. She's since married and moved out of state, but I guess they stay in contact enough for her to remain LKH's 'sister.'

I'll actually cut her slack on this front because I seem to remember her being on good terms with both Chica and Pili. Yes, it's a bit dumb, but LKH is ALWAYS focused on how things affect her. Having her actually care about another person is enough of an anomaly, by my... extremely lowered... standards for her, that I'm just impressed that it's a blog that's NOT about her.

I have a problem with this quote, because it seems to be saying that what matters most is how pretty someone thinks you are. Now, I know my boyfriend thinks I'm attractive, but I also think that the woman I met the other week who was massively inappropriate at me about being a "chubby chaser" and made me deeply uncomfortable probably thinks I'm even more beautiful than my boyfriend does, given that I fit into her specific fetish group and my boyfriend doesn't fetishise my body type*. That doesn't mean I should be with her over him. I'd rather be with someone who thinks I've pretty-but-not-spectacular but clicks with me on an interpersonal level than with the person who thinks I'm gorgeous but doesn't want to spend any time with me outside the bedroom because they can't stand my personality.


* This isn't to say fetishists are all inappropriate, creepy people. Just that inappropriate, creepy people are, sadly, more likely to go "HEY I HAVE THIS FETISH YOU FIT LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT" and thus make fetishists seem inappropriate and creepy because the nice, appropriate ones don't randomly bring it up in non-sexual conversation.

It is saying what matters most is how pretty someone thinks you are. LKH is pretty clear in all her writing about this, but was especially explicit in "Shutdown". Love = sexual attraction and nothing else. Sexual attraction = how pretty someone is and nothing else.

This highlights, for me, how different the early books were. Anita knew Jean-Claude was good looking, but wasn't about to jump in bed with him, and even after having sex with him, she didn't really love him. I don't remember exactly how she and Richard starting dating, but it feels like physical attraction wasn't the only part of it (and it was dating, not just sex).

As the books went on, all of that disappeared and it's as you say, in all the current books, love=sexual attraction=pretty (and all of that is wrapped in a big ardeur fog).

I actually think she was trying to go for the "someone thinks you're a beautiful person in and out" kinda thing "even if you don't think you are pretty" which would be a nice sentiment if it wasn't leading me in the direction of, well One Direction and their "you don't know how beautiful you are and that makes you beautiful" schlock=___=
