Date: 2006-05-28 07:37 am (UTC)Gah. You know you can hire screenwriters to do that. People that know the language.
If Jon writes is they'll probably have to hire one anyways to translate into filmspeek. I also bet it'll be full of camera angles and how they want things to look... Which is unproffesional screenwriting and annoys directors. That's what they and cinemetographers do.

Date: 2006-05-28 07:33 am (UTC)Even when the filmakers want the author involved they don't give them executive power over it.
A studio would want to option Anita Blake because it has a guaranteed audience. That equals money. But they are not going to dump millions into something and be all like "LKH, you get all the power"... Because that would just be silly on their part. They might relent to a giving her a little power but it would be for MUCH less money and after a long struggle on her part. And considering she only uses her friends to do things I don't think any of the big three have the tenacity and the knowlege of the business to get that done.
For example, in the movie Underwold they didn't want the director and gave them less money to make the movie as a compromise. In Saved they didn't want the director and almost didn't option the movie(this was also because of the "controversial" subjects)... And that was an independent film if I remember correctly.
The big studios want to make money, not art. Best bet for creative control would probably go through an independent venue to MAKE the movie then get a big company to distribute... But that would most likely create a less advanced looking product as it would have a lower budget and LKH herself would probably have to throw money at it. Also independent films have a very shifty budget because the people finacing will sometimes pull out/refuse to give more money as they see what the movie is becoming or if they suddenly realize they dissagree with content/don't want further involvement with the film.
Eh... This is all from my limited understanding so if anyone knows more about this and I'm wrong, please tell me.
