For those that aren't aware, "Beauty" is LKH's latest work. It boasts a stunning 2.1 stars on Amazon. As it says on the summary page:

32 reviewers aren't wrong. This is literally one sex scene that was rejected from being added to the published books, coupled with some of LKH's cut-and-paste backstory in case you can't keep track of all the bland men in Anita's life.

Even the cover labels it an "outtake" which apparently means, "we didn't know what to do with this so we decided to see if people would pay $2.99 to download it it."  No excuses yet for why Anita is apparently a brown-haired blue-eyed unscarred  tan-but-white lady.  I kind of like the cover, though.  It's not pretending that anything is happening in this story but everyone lounging around and focusing on Anita.  Plus, the writing superimposed over her chest makes it look like they just said "fuck this book, I don't even care" and stole an image off a stock photo site.

In any case, if you don't feel like slogging through the 33 pages yourself, here's a summary and some choice excerpts!

One of the many things that can really push my ‘berserk button’ when reading anything by LKH is her repeated overuse of certain words or phrases.  I’ve just finished with SKINTRADE, Anita seems to be unable to let any chapter or situation go by without using the word ‘flavor’. We have flavours 0f psychics, were animals, investigators, Christians and ethnic groups.   ‘Spill’ seems to be the default word for any movement; people spill into/onto/through things. I’m not sure what she is trying to describe when she says spill, to me water ‘spills’ from an over full cup; people can spill something but generally can’t spill themselves.  At least she seems to have dropped refereeing to ‘second bananas’ and ‘taking one for the team’...for now.

There are a number of books I consider to be "bad" that I nevertheless re-read regularly: many of them have the immediate effect of inspiring me to try to write something better. Most of the recent additions to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series are not on that list, but nevertheless, I keep re-reading the damn things because I can't remember what the hell happens in them. Obviously something must have, if there were four or five hundred pages written about it, but the actual details of the latter-day Anitas just leak immediately out of my head if I put the book down and turn around too fast. (Perhaps it's a coping mechanism.)

So, in effect, every time I read the books, it's like reading them the first time. The upside is that I always have a vaguely entertaining (if in a rather twisted lulz-y way) fallback once I've read everything else in my house that sounds decent and need a book in a hurry. The downside, of course, is that I forget the best (worst?) lines.

So I thought I'd better write them down this time. )

in incubus dreams, i got about halfway through before i began unofficially counting the number of times miss laurell used the world "spill" (or "spilled," "spilling," etc). unofficially, i counted maybe 8 or 9 "spills" before i started officially counting. 32 after that.

having started re-reading danse macabre, in the first 160 pages or so: 11. [EDIT: 16 at 314 pages. EDIT EDIT: 21 at 383 pages (also, 4 times on one page!)]

i know i have favorite words that i like to use, but this goes above and beyond. now, while reading danse macabre, i've tried to decide if other words could have been substituted and stayed true to the original meaning of the passage. yep.

a LOT of things annoy me about the series, especially the last 4 books, but this "spill" nonsense is what is bugging me this week. if miss laurell had an editor with ballz, perhaps it would have made a difference?

have you all noticed this overusage of the word "spill"?

Title: "No rest for the wicked"
Date: 4 February 2005

Oh. My. God. I don't think it's a good idea for me to copy the entry and insert snarks throughout, because some of the things I want to say are things that genteel young ladies just shouldn't know about, let alone write. So I'll just pick out the pertinent points.

This woman is starting to disturb me. )

EDIT: Terribly amused that some people on LJ don't seem to realise that the feed isn't Ms Hamilton's actual blog.
