The entry in which LKH brags yet again about being at Comic Con. And breaks my heart a little.

The three [movies] that I'm aware of are: Stardust, Beowulf, and Coreline. They are not so accidentally all Neil Gaiman projects. Two based on his books and one he co-wrote the screenplay for. Why are we aware of those movies more than others? We've actually spoken with Neil, and he and I share an agent.

I. What. Huh? (And it's Coraline, by the way. From what I can remember, Neil said it was supposed to be "Caroline" but he kept mistyping it so he just went with it.)

They've spoken with Neil? The man drips awesomeness. If she's spoken with him, how did she not manage to catch even a bit of awesomeness?

She and Neil share an agent? How? Is it to balance out the sheer awesomeness of Neil? DOES NOT COMPUTE. Neil is actually a WRITER. Go look at his blog. He makes even the most everyday things like walking his dog seem magical. I'm sure even his grocery lists are things of beauty. He reads. He writes. He collaborates. He doesn't use some lame-ass Ivory Tower defence when the real world doesn't go his way. He is, from every account I've encountered, not just a great writer, but a fine human being.

I admit, I died a little when I read the Neil part of the blog. I mean, if she somehow did not manage to capture even an ounce of Neil's awesomeness just by being in the same space, what if she accidentally infected him?

ETA: I guess there's one saving grace. I've yet to see a Neil Gaiman endorsement on any of her books.

Neil is full of mind-blowing awesome and WIN. Laurell is full of mind-blowing suck and fail.

How...HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE THAT THEY'VE MET?!?!?!?! It...it just isn't right. She has no right to even be breathing the same AIR he does!

*goes off in a corner, whimpering* STAY AWAY FROM MY NEIL LAURELL!!!! You're the equivalent of a literary leper! Do not infect a writer that is a BILLION times more awesome than you are, or ever will be. For pity's sake, stay away from him! He has more talent in his pinkie than you do in all ten of your fingers!

(And BTW, I've known they share an agent for awhile now. It horrified me, but I'd managed to forget. She mentioned Neil Gaiman in her blog. Dear sweet Zombie Jesus.)

Ya know...I kind of wish that Neil would rip on her in his blog as a "crazy lady" but I know he's far too nice and gracious to do that. Another reason why he is SO MUCH BETTER than she is.

Did anyone else detect a sense of jealousy from LKH? Maybe I'm just projecting, but it seemed as if she was saying, "Look at all this crap we had to wade through before getting to the stuff we wanted to see/do." And by mentioning they share an agent (which I was surprised to learn), maybe she's really pissed because Neil Gaiman has 3 movies coming out, and she has none.

I <3 Neil Gaiman's writing much more than I ever liked LKH at any point in time. Her blog is fairly annoying. You'd also think she could manage to spell the name of one of his books correctly?

I'm not really a fan of Neil Gaiman; I have no problem with him, but just never really got into his books. However, I respect him as a writer and as a person--both for his accomplishments and for his talent.

LKH is nowhere near is league, and can never hope to be. The idea of those two associating seems like something out of a freakish nightmare. Well...nightmare for Neil, anyway.

Okay, I may have an overly-attuned radar for pathetic Neil Gaiman fangirling considering that I remember way back in the dawn of time when he was just some arsehole who was always in front of me in line at the local geek bookstore and took forever chatting up the sales people when I just wanted to buy my Poppy Z Brite chapbook and go home and drown my pseudo-gothy sorrows... but WOW does that ever come off as some desperate-ass completely pathetic name dropping and begging for attention. Which is hilarious considering that it not like you hear people who as far as I know are actually his friends, like Will Shetterly or Emma Bull or Steven Brust going on and on about how 'OMG they share an agent!'

Oh wait... that's probably because those people are actually writers. With, like, talent and stuff.

But seriously, Neil is a rockstar and she's namedropping for the attention. Because that sentence is completely without a point. "I know about a bunch of movies, Neil is awesome, and oh I can do an easy six-degrees."

Also "we've spoken" sounds like she and her gang "had words" with Neil. Oh, LKH.

And, this makes me laugh a little, but she's probably the only person that would mention Neil for his movies. Jesus, woman, go read a fucking book. (Just, you know, not one of his. Because, no. DO NOT WANT.)

Yes, Laurell, you are indeed now grasping totally at straws. "We've spoken." Yes, so have many of his fans. And there is this marvelous invention called The Internet, where he keeps a blog that does not suck, where his fans also communicate with him. You are not special.

Also? Sharing an agent is rather like Rob Liefeld saying "Jim Lee and I both drew comics for Marvel." Doesn't make you special by association, dear.

I wouldn't mind seeing Guilty Pleasures made into a movie though... though given the fact that in cinema the things suck more and more after the sequel + the poorness of incubus dreams.... we'd need a special scale of fail for the later movies....

Yes, they spelled his first name wrong, but it is him. Mr. Gaiman contributed a poem called "The Old Warlock's Reverie" and yours truly contributed an effort entitled "The Eyes of Love" (a title that was hastily added and to this day I regret.)

(This is not as huge a deal as it may seem. I got in because one of the editors was a friend of mine, saw me win a poetry slam with that particular poem, and asked me to submit it. I did so, got printed, and now I can brag about sharing pages with the mighty to the end of my days.)

Gaiman is my favorite modern fiction author, but the fact the he and LKH share an agent doesn't throw me all that much. Agents, like publishers and lawyers and the other bussiness-end support level of the writing business are preeeeety much in it for the money. LKH can't write very well and her subject matter has taken a huge dive, but she still sells a whole crap-load of books. Her poorly realized non-erotic monster-porn is making cash hand-over-giant-shlong, and the business guys want a piece of that.

True, actually talented authors like Mr.Gaiman make a large amount of bank, too; but most agents and publishers and et cetera wouldn't turn down the prospect of MORE money flowing into their accounts. Hence contracts with people like Laurel.

That's just my take on it.

Not a big Neil fan myself. It took me about a month to read American Gods although I did enjoy it. He's a good solid writer, but I guess he is a bit too literary for my personal tastes to put him on my top shelf of favorites. That being said, he is one of the most talented writers in the SF/fantasy/horror field today. LKH 10 years ago had the potential to be one of the best in the paranormal field, but she since has let her fame get to her head and decided that she doesn't need an editor or critique group to help her with her Mary Sueness. I mean if she gets her rocks off on roleplaying out the Anita/Merryverse then perhaps she should write journals on the rp and write realistic non-Merry Sue ness in her novels. It is possible to do both. Now, she is a laughingstock to old fans and soon becomes the same to new ones once they read the old stuff and catch up to the new. She has to be deluding herself on her popularity for her current stuff. And while she may be extremely happy with her 2nd husband, it seems that he is having a negative impact on her writing because he seems to say that everything that drips off her pen is perfect. Knowing this trait, a good writer would ask for an expert's critique, but she doesn't and therein lies her fall from the list of premiere paranormal writers. For me, Kim Harrison is tops these days.

Oh, and did anyone else find the royal We in her blog to be extremely tedious and annoying?

I generally try to introduce people to Neil Gaiman with books other than American Gods, since it is very self-consciously a magnum opus and most of his other writing is not as heavy-handed as that. Also, a lot of otherwise hardcore Gaiman fans hate AG, don't ask me why.

I have to admit the name-dropping thing amuses me to no end. I've spoken to Neil, AND he drew Morpheus on the back of my jacket! And I'm just a fan who happened to run into him at a con.

Things like this make me think LKH isn't really part of the genre community, even though she writes genre. Which is sad, cause the community is fantastic.

I'd agree that this sounds more like name-dropping that actual friendly chatter. It's like LKH really wants to be more mainstream/taken as a Serious Writer like Diana Gabalan or more obviously popular and well known like Nora Roberts but she doesn't write well enough or write something that is going to recieve lots of reviewing and press like Roberts or Gabalan so she's stuck being a genre writer and I think from her blogs at least it sounds like she really hates being stuck there. So to see other writers who write fantasy genere getting to be more mainstream/recognizable to people outside the genere it makes her really want to be like that.

Now now *collective pats on back*. Lots of authors share agents, just like how rotten actors share agencies with brilliant ones. Neil was a bit more fortunate than most, so he was able to get a really prominent one.

I doubt she gcould get an endorsement. If she ever did, it would probably be a fragment ("LKH's books are perfect" with the "if you're a mindless sex-obsessed illiterate" snipped out).

And for the record, Neil is a walking wad of unfurling awesomeness. I doubt she could infect him -- his talent is too distant, creepy, original and impenetrable for her to get anything on it. More likely that she'll latch on to something in his books and copy it -- urban deities (excuse me -- dieties), Dream figures or something.

Yeah, I detect some seething bitterness that dear ol' Neil has THREE movies in the offing, one of which he WROTE independently of a novel, and two based on his works. And I notice she doesn't mention the "Neverwhere" TV show, the "Mirrormask" movie, or the fact that he adapted the "Princess Mononoke" movie to English -- all of which shows he is a respected writer not just of books, but of any wordcraft.

Yet somehow nobody's ever asked LKH to pen even a sitcom episode, nor have her works ever been adapted. Hmmmmm, I wonder why.
