Welcome to LKH Lashouts!
Dec. 21st, 2004 06:05 pmBefore you proceed, read the info page. Oh, and before you post? Read the info page again. I have a very low tolerance level for stupidity.
This is a community for those who like to snark/bitch/vent/etc. about Laurell K. Hamilton's writings. If you still enjoy them, that's fine—but don't come here and whine, or launch into a big argument about how Anita is discovering her self. Most of all, don't say anything remotely close to "if you hate the books so much, why are you still reading?", because you won't last long.
For those of you, however, who are seeking refuge from the fawning fangirls & -boys and think the ardeur is one of the most pathetic excuses for a plot device ever, welcome home. You're among kindred spirits here. Snark away—but please follow the rules in doing so.
Snark, ahoy!

Date: 2004-12-31 04:27 am (UTC)For years I've been bitching about the downfall of the LKH books. I wrote rather catty reviews of the first (http://www.angelifire.com/mi2/lorelei/kissofshadows.html) two (http://www.angelfire.com/mi2/lorelei/caressoftwilight.html) Meredith Gentry novels (and am planning a review of the third). I even ripped Nightseer a new one (http://www.angelfire.com/mi2/lorelei/nightseer.html).
Because I love LKH's books. Really I do. I own them all, save Incubus Dreams (which I'm waiting for in paperback, because dude, I'm not paying $23.95 for 600+ pages of supernatural porn). They're the ultimate crack. But...they're so stupid, in a fun (and lately not-so-fun) way, that it's impossible not to mock them. The Mary Sue quotient just adds to the mockability.
This may be the best (and most badly needed) idea for a community ever.

Date: 2004-12-31 03:08 pm (UTC)Ye Gods, Nightseer was like bad published fanfic. Gah. Please feel free to repost those reviews here, or post any new ones you may do.
I made the community mostly because we're persecuted (and in some cases, that verb is not too strong) in most LKH forums. It seems like the majority of fans are of the "OMG Anita is teh best evah!" variety, and can't even entertain the notion that the books are just rehashing themselves. If anything, THEY are the closed-minded ones, not us.

Date: 2005-01-01 09:58 pm (UTC)Erm, do the links I just provided count? And I'm planning a review of Seduced By Moonlight soon...ideas are already presenting themselves.
And yeah, Nightseer was bad. Not even all that mockably bad, either. It's boring and confusing, which are two of the deadlier sins in fiction.
It seems like the majority of fans...can't even entertain the notion that the books are just rehashing themselves.
I take the position that LKH's books are jelly bean fiction...tasty, go down easily, and completely lacking nutritional value. Unfortunately lately all of her
beansbooks seem to come in the same flavour, and we're starting to choke as a result.I don't know myself about the persecution (I've never visited the official boards, and only occasionally lurked at Gentry Investigations (http://www.gentryinvestigations.com)), but I've snarked about the books before with friends. I think everyone but the truly die-hard fans know that Anita and co. are taking a severe nosedive, and have learned to take the books with a freaking pillar of salt. "They're silly, but they're fun!" seems to be the general consensus.
I haven't hung around the boards. I have, however, read the mounting reviews of Incubus Dreams on amazon.com, the majority of which are a chorus of "this is SHIT and I'm never buying another AB book EVER", "OMG my sweet Laurell why didst thou betray me?", and the odd dissenting "um, go Nathaniel?" More bitterness than loyalty, from my perspective.
But then, amazon.com isn't a fan site and doesn't serve as a "fandom cheerleader" to wax poetic on how much LKH is teh kewliez and how they would love to travel hundreds of miles to Missouri for the opportunity to personally lick her shiny black patent-leather boots. *shrug* I'd have to visit the forum to see the awful truth for myself.

Date: 2005-01-02 05:08 am (UTC)Yep, the links are fine. Just put them in a separate post, though, so they get the exposure they deserve: some people don't read comments, after all, and those reviews must be read :)
Re: Bitterfen.
Date: 2005-01-31 05:21 am (UTC)Darnit, I want back the mystery flavour, and the shoot 'em up flavour, and the supernatural flavour, the wisecracky flavour, and the conflicted flavour, too.
Hello, all, by the way. Long term reader here, and I adore the older books.
The ones of late, though?
SHUDDERS, and not in that good way!
