Hello all, very occasional commenter and long-time lurker here (I am a champion lurker. I can lurk like no one's business). Anyway, we've all seen the hideousness that is the Guilty Pleasures comic, and laughed accordingly. So I was quite excited yesterday when I got to work and found the Harry Dresden comic waiting for me. The art is good! Everyone is proportional! It is funny, as opposed to snicker-inducing!
The story: A hapless night watchmen has been torn apart at the Chicago zoo, and the prime suspect is Moe the gorilla. Except that makes no sense. So Murphy calls in Harry to investigate.

Needless to say, Harry discovers that Something Is Afoot, and it's not a berzerk gorilla. The series is a four-parter, so we'll have to stay tuned.
And finally, at the back of the book, was a preview for the adaptation of Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, illustrated by none other than Brett Booth, which is why the creature, despite being stitched together from dismembered corpses, is so very pretty.

Long, flowing hair? Check.
Freakishly rippling abs, displayed by open shirt/coat? Check.
Thighs like a Christmas goose? Check and check.
Uergh.

Date: 2008-04-18 02:43 am (UTC)As for the Dresden Files stuff, that is pretty much how I expected Harry to look. :) Okay, I expected more hats, but that's because I LOOOOVE the book covers and I'm a goth cowboy nerd. Murphy, not so much -- I expected her to look more cherubic and cute, except in expression. But she's not bad.

Date: 2008-04-19 01:52 am (UTC)See, LKH? This is what happens when you pay attention to details of your characters' lives, even if it's something as teeny as a haircut.

Date: 2008-04-20 06:36 am (UTC)If he'd been a Brett Booth pouting emoboy, I think I would have gotten very violent. Murphy-with-a-machine-gun violent.

Date: 2008-04-18 09:03 pm (UTC)The other one though, I thought it looked like Jean Claude. It's kind of what I'd expect to see if Jean-Claude and Asher (whom I've not seen drawn) someone how became fused. It's really bad. Besides the real Creature has yellow skin.

Date: 2008-04-20 06:33 am (UTC)And really, this one had everything that LKH's didn't. Realistic artwork, witty literate remarks, women who don't have to be "teh sexy but pretending they aren't," a sense of humor, and some cliffhangers that aren't just someone leaping at our hero.
And it helps to have a protagonist who isn't illegally threatening people, isn't waving his balls in others' faces, isn't snogging strippers, and isn't just bumbling around blindly in hopes of tripping over the murderer. It's even nicer to have a protagonist who doesn't label everyone who isn't worshipful of him "evil." Note the notebook whacking Harry in the head.
Even better, Butcher ain't so in love with his own prose that he weighs down the action with it. And the shot of Harry pointing a finger at a Red Court vampire really made me laugh.
