Self-Pimpage post
Dec. 31st, 2011 04:57 amI'm sure I'm not the only one here who was inspired to write by LKH in some way or another. Before I'd ever discovered her, I had started writing stories that were basically a clone of Christopher Pike's Last Vampire series. (Oh, middle school Me; you were so dumb) Buuut, once I found Bloody Bones, my whole outlook on what could be written changed. She definitely took my imagination in a new direction.
Then, as the books got steadily worse, my inspiration to write changed from, "I really like these books, and would like to write something in the same genre!" to "Good lord. Anyone can do better than this, and now I feel like I need to balance the genre scales with something decent."
Now, I don't personally have anything out there for you guys to check out and maybe buy, but I know several of you guys do. I've heard, and seen, little bumps here and there from some of you regarding things you've written that you would like to get out into the world. This post is all about what you guys have done that you'd like others to see.
What this post is:
o A pimpage post for your original books (self-pub and mainstream pub are both acceptable)
o A pimpage post for your blogs about reading/writing
What this post is not:
o A pimpage post for your fanfic
o A pimpage post for your personal facebook/twitter/social networking sites
Mainly, this is going to sit in the sidebar of the site as a place that you all can check out from time to time to see if any of your fellow Lashers have any new books/blogs to suggest.
Things we're looking for in these posts:
o Links to find what you're pimping
o What it is you're pimping (book? blog?)
o Title
o A brief description
o cost (if applicable)
So, Lashers, get thee to the comments! (Please see us with questions if you're not sure if something you want to add would be allowed.)

Date: 2012-01-01 01:28 am (UTC)Only Death can keep her is about a guy named Hitoshi Ross (Japanese demon father and Scottish mother) who has just had his life packed up and moved from his beloved home of San Francisco to College Station, Texas. While contemplating the potential opportunities for his life (not that there are many for a half demon), he rescues a girl from a group of corrupt cops. In that one act, Hitoshi finds himself deep in a hate-filled fight between magic Folk and humans.

Date: 2012-01-01 11:54 am (UTC)So I guess I'll start with my first published novel, Afterlife (http://www.amazon.com/Afterlife-ebook/dp/B002ZG8RWK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1325418361&sr=8-2), which is an urban fantasy starring Yasmin Stoker, ghost tour guide by day, vampire-eating wraith by night. When Yasmin encounters a kind of ghost she's never seen before, she's dragged into a mess of murder, conspiracy, cocktails, and personal revelations. It's not cheap (small presses, ggrr at your prices) but I think it offers something a little different to the usual run-of-the-mill UF about sexy vampires and the women who love them (although there is a sexy vampire involved).
Or if werewolves and drugs and England is more your thing, I have Wild (http://www.amazon.com/Wild-The-Vargulf-Trilogy-ebook/dp/B0053PVW22/ref=sr_1_4?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1325418642&sr=1-4), in which Lizzie Creighton is forced out of her hard-partying, drug-taking life when she's bitten by a werewolf.
And, if it's okay for me to do so, I'll add a link to my writerly blog (although the content is mirrored here at LJ): One Hot Mess (http://naomijay.blogspot.com/).
Ta!

Date: 2012-01-02 12:19 am (UTC)I haven't self-published (yet) so I'll just drop in the synopsis for my novel and I would be really appreciative of feedback, whether it's positive or negative:
One bullet is all it took to transform Jordan Amador into the last hope for souls of the dead.
Eighteen-year old New York resident Jordan accidentally shot and killed Andrew Bethsaida, who just happened to be a Seer: a person who can communicate with ghosts, angels, and demons. Worse still, she did so on the eve of her own awakening into becoming one, making her the very last Seer on Earth with no one to guide her. As penance, God gives her two years to help one hundred souls with unfinished business cross over from Earth to the afterlife or she will go to Hell. Just as she approaches the final deadline, Jordan stumbles across her hundredth soul: a poltergeist named Michael whose ability to physically touch things makes him distinct from her usual encounters with the dead. However, the deeper she delves solving his sudden death, the more she realizes something sinister is on the horizon. With time running short on her deadline, Jordan stumbles across a plot that may unravel the fragile balance among Heaven, Hell, and Earth. Her life is plunged into chaos as she is hunted by demons that want to use her valuable Seer blood to bring about the end of the world and discovers that these creatures have a frightening connection to her family bloodline.

Date: 2012-01-02 12:50 am (UTC)I suppose I should put down my hopeful little plot line. Basic in a nutshell idea: Greek mythology in space.
On Space Station Greece, Greek mythology is alive and in full force. Heroes rise, villians fall, and the gods watch over everything. However, the gods are not really gods, and when they change host bodies, they must act out certain myths. When Eros changes bodies, he sets his sights on Iona of Tyrins to be his new Psyche. While Iona must prove herself, the previous Psyche is not thrilled about reliquishing her throne. Between a vindictive Aphrodite, a scheming Demeter and a stubborn Psyche, will Iona live long enough to take on the mantle of a goddess?

Date: 2012-01-11 08:22 pm (UTC)I also write book reviews for several major Canadian newspapers, and I wrote one on A Discovery of Witches, which has vampires in. It's a really dumb book, and aggravated me for many of the same reasons that AB & MG and the Twilight stuff aggravates me. (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/books/a-discovery-of-witches-by-deborah-harkness/article1938697/) What makes me sad is that I so WANTED to love ADOW, but I just couldn't; it was too awful.
Lastly, the thing that I really do want to plug is Michael Rowe's vampire novel ENTER, NIGHT. (http://www.chizinepub.com/books/enter.php). Now, I readily admit that I'm biased, as my hubby and I own the publishing company in question, ChiZine Publications. But we wanted to put out an old-school vampire novel, where the vampires are monsters, and the interpersonal relationships go horribly wrong. And I think Michael wrote a brilliant book, though it's not for the squeamish. Think Salem's Lot, not Twilight. Ummm...that's all the plugging I got, I guess? Oh, I should say that this stuff isn't free, alas. Though of course the poetry on my own site is readable for naught, as is the review! And the romance is only 99 cents. : ) Cheers & thanks & hope you enjoy! I love everyone's rants on here!!
